So to make my life easier, I purchased a 1x30 WEN Model # 6515 sander. Had some free money from Sears ($22 bucks worth), so using that I paid $52 shipped to my door.

2.3-amp motor, speeds of up to 3160 feet per minute on the belt and 3450 RPM on the disc

Been looking at getting the Harbor Freight unit, but then saw this and the free money, seemed like maybe a better deal that the HF one for the same money. I won't be home to try it out for a couple weeks.

I have done a couple stock removal file knives, so it's not going to be a hard use machine. I'll probably end up doing some more finishing to my first file knife to give this a trial run.

Let us know how it does! I have a WEN bandsaw I'm pretty happy with.

I was just checking over at the "jungle" and saw 10 pack of 120 grit for $9.98 and 10 pack of 240 grit for $8.00. I think this unit comes with one 100 grit belt and 80 grit wheel.

I started with one of these. But like all knifemakers, I have switched to 2x72. I'll give you this advice. Using ceramic belts will be a night & day difference in the machine's cutting ability. I get all by belts from True Grit. They have the orange "Blaze" ceramic belts available. They really are worth the money, and will allow the machine to do more work with less abuse.

I have both a 2x72 and a 1x30, and I use the 2x72 for the "heavy lifting" and the 1x30 for the final stages. Both are useful, in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice, I am not going to be going into full time or even "hobby"knife making per say. I occasionally like to plinker around with it, this will just make my plinkering a little easier. Google'ing the ceramic belts now, thanks again.

Oh! Absolutely! I still have my 1x30 as well. I typically use it on all of my handle scales outside, as the 2x72 is too heavy to lug back & forth.

Well it arrived, and I did some light reprofiling of some cheap blades to see how it performed with 100 grit belt that came with it (I have several ceramic belts coming in from Tru-Grit).

I was impressed with it.

Here are some results.
