I just purchased a camp tramp. I have always loved Busse and just recently found out about SwampRat. I'm going to love this knife. Just a couple of questions though. 1) How thick is the blade on the CT?
2)How good is the the steel being used? I'm in the military and am going to use this knife till nothings left. Thanks for making these knives SwampRat.:D

If you're going to use it 'til there's nothing left, just remember the blade differentially hardened. So if you get pretty far back from the original edge, the steel will get real soft.

hey big jim, welcome to swamprat forums

did you get the black or Desert coated Tramp?

I'd opt for the Desert coated, if I didn't already have one in black. Seems to be a super tough coating for the added $10.
Yet to test it on my InfiCoot, can't decide if its a user yet.

Hey Big Jim
Welcome to the Rat's Nest, glad you stopped by. :D:D

The CT is made from 1/4" stock and it is differentially hardened. However there is no need to worry about getting out of the hardened zone unless you use a grinder to sharpen your knives. ;):D

We have put these knives through some extreme torture tests, if you haven't seen them check this link http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=000118

Also we have a lot of people in the military currently carrying Rat's and they have all had good things to say about them.

I hope you stick around and join in our discussions :D:D

bigblackjim,
I am also in the military and have carried a CT for many months now. There is no field chore that'll defeat this knife. Unless the urge suddenly grabs you to use it has a sledgehammer wedge to break concrete, it'll stay user grade a lot longer than you or I.
As to the hardening, from the pictures I've seen, that temper line goes back about a half inch, so I don't think it likely your edge will ever move into the soft stuff, unless you intentionally reprofile it.

I e-mailed Swamprat and upgraded to the BattleRat I figured i could use the extra size for just about anything. Thanks for the answers about the temper line what is thst and is a good thing? About hte steel being used I don't know anything about it how does it compare to other steels? GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Make sure that carrying the BR will be okay, as some units won't let you take the really big knives. Even the CT exceeds some units' allowances.

The blade is differentially heat treated, so that the edge is harder than the spine. This allows the edge to get and stay sharp, but leaves the body of the blade tougher and more resistant to shock. The temper line is the transition point. There's a great picture somewhere, but Eric will have to put it up, as I don't know how.

As to SR101, all I can tell you is it is some form of 52-100 steel. They talk about it a bit here:
http://swampratknifeworks.com/specs.html

It will get very sharp, and is very resistant to abrasion. In all the time I've had my CT, I've only done serious sharpening three times, where I actually had to remove a bit of metal. Other than that, I push the edge strait on a little ceramic rod, and it will slice paper--not quite push-cut papper, but that's just because of the blade thickness.
Wipe the edge clean when your through using it, and drip a little oil on once in a while. That's really all the care it needs!

I'm still waiting for mine!! I think orders should be filled before new products are out!!! {desert tan CT & BR} Maybe I will get them tomorrow!! :D

Hey Eric,

I seem to remember, back when SRKW made its debut, that someone also showed another amazing picture of what the blades could handle. I think it showed a Battle Rat jacking a 78 Ford F-150 pickup truck. Do you have a copy of that picture? Can you add it to the info link you gave, above?

Thanks.
