Just Purchased Spyderco Persistence

I just ordered a Persistence from Amazon and should have it later today. I'm curious as to how this will compare to my current EDC, an Ontario Rat Model-II. They're both in the budget-folder category, with a similar size. I love the narrowness of the Rat in my pocket, but miss the hole of a Spyderco. This should be an interesting comparison.

If you carry right-front-pocket and you like narrow pocket profile, you'll want to have the Persistence clip positioned for tip-up carry.

With the blade positioned at the outside pocket seam, the narrowest part of the handle, with its smooth curve, will then sit at the pocket opening.

With tip down carry, the widest span of handle+blade spine is right at the pocket mouth, with the choil jimping/terminous waiting to bite your hand if you reach in for anything else in your pocket. (more pronounced for Persistence vs Tenacious).

I snagged open the palm of my hand before flipping the clip. ( no burrs were present BTW.) Went from "hmm, no like," to "Terrific!"

Enjoy your new Spydie

You'll enjoy the Persistence regardless of carry method. It's a great blade. I've had mine for about a year and a half with no complaints even though I don't particularly like Chinese steels. It will serve you well.

Have fun.

Thanks. I only carry tip-up, front right pocket, with the blade facing the outside part of the pocket, so that a blade can't accidentally open in my pocket. This thing is going to have to be pretty impressive for it to kick my Rat-2 out of the pocket.

Thanks. I'll have an opinion that I'll post in a few hours.

Both are great for the money, no doubt. Gifted a rat 2 to my brother and Persistence to my brother in law. No complaints from either.

Persistence was one of my first Spydercos and does still see some pocket time. Great blade and perfect size for a smaller carry knife. I have no experience with Ontario knives so I cannot compare the two.

It arrived 15-minutes ago. I'll take some pictures later. My initial thoughts are 1) heavier than I thought it was going to be, 2) much taller than I was hoping it wold be, 3) fit and finish seems to be great, 4) G-10 scales feel great. The tallness is what bothers me the most. As mentioned before, I was looking to possibly replace my Rat Model-2 with this knife, but I can't imagine this is going to be equal or better in comfort for me to carry. As much as I like the Spyderco hole, it's existence makes the blade so tall, thus making the over closed knife tall. Taller than what I'm willing to carry comfortably.

Again, this is only my initial thoughts of less than 30-minutes of ownership. I'll comment more, as I play with the knife.

Spyderco's value series make for great EDCs, I'd take one over a Rat 2 any day. You'll be very happy with yours, I'm sure.

I had thoughts of purchasing a persistence over the weekend at a local dealer. But I'm used to my Pacific and Salt 1 and like you, thought it was a little bulky and heavy for carry. Good looking knife though.

So I settled for another Pacific in SE.

Keep us informed though. I could always go back and get it.

Have you ever tried carrying it IWB yet?

I usually wear slacks and a web belt, the two materials are thin enough to clip most knives to both the pants and belt, and the width or height is basically irrelevant.

I've never held either of those, so I can't help you much.

I'm just curious to see how the persistence works for someone moving up from something lighter and thinner. That's the same boat I would be in.

Yeah, I love the size and handle of the Persistence, but for some reason, when it's clipped to my pocket, it feels about double its size (as an exaggeration). I ended up taking off the clip, throwing a lanyard on it, and letting it sit in the bottom of my front pocket. Works for me.

This is what it mean when I say tall. A Rat-2 in front of a Delica-4 in front of the Persistence.

So far, not very well.

A Centofante might get you closer, and price is very reasonable.

But if height when folded is your primary concern, look at Kiwi 4, Des Horn, Jess Horn, Memory, or possibly the Double Bevel may work for you. All of those knives are in quite a different category than the Rat 2, and drastically more expensive.

And like I mentioned in my above post; the Raven 2 is more in the same entry budget category (still more expensive than Rat 2 or Avispa), and slightly shorter closed than Persistence...
