I had these two knives laying around from when I thought I was a knifemaker. They are both mild steel:barf:, but I decided to go ahead and re-grind them with my new belt sander... I think they would make pretty cool actual knives, with the right steel and more finishing work! What do you think?

Looks like the beginning of a new field of study. I would love to get into re-grinds. Step one for me though is mastering re-bevels on Japanese water stones.

I'd have to say , good work , as I have never even attempted to make a knife . Even though they are not hardened , have you tried them to see how they feel and work ?

I did try using one of them to prune a tree... Of course the edge folded up on me instantly lol.

You can harden mild steel. 1018 up to HRc 40-42, 1036 probably up to high 40s, low 50s. You need to use superquench. 1045 will hit 60.

The bevel on your camping knife looks good. You have some talent and skill. Might as well take it to the next level and learn a little about heat treat. If it interests you alot go over to the knifemakers forum.
