I made a post the other day how I'm really coming around to the Becker knives and after being a die hard Kukuri and tomahawk guy I was torn about my next blade purchase......yet another beloved Kukuri or a BK2. I got the BK2.

Mega impressive knife......I love it.

Now the bad news........the sheath sucks........big time.

I read literally 100 plus reviews on the BK2 and I kept reading about people talking bad about the sheath. I would say to myself..."it's not the sheath that sucks.....it's the nylon belt loop. Quit saying sheath." I have a boatload of blades with kydex sheaths and by looking at the sheath online......I was convinced the sheath was just the way I like it. Well it's not. Man....I hate to slam this thing, but I'm really disappointed.

The BK2 snaps so tight inside, it's actually dangerous to try to wrench it back out. The thumb release actually splits apart when you apply pressure and looks like it will certainly pinch your thumb if you ever did release the blade.

I installed a tek-lok to the sheath but it's not usable because you need to use both hands.....one on the handle and one on the sheath to forcefully pull the two apart. It's actually dangerous.

Again.....I really hate to down this setup because I really want to enjoy this......but it's really hard to get excited about this sheath.

I suppose I need to ask myself how much I like the knife and am I willing to drop another $100+ for a sheath that actually works. I'm just wondering why they made the sheath this way. Very disappointed.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I know I could wedge the sheath apart or heat it up and spread it apart, but I really shouldn't have to do that and even if I did, the thumb release would be spread so far apart it would be uncomfortable at best and probably end up cutting your thumb or snapping when you applied pressure.

Thanks in advance for any insight. Sorry for such a downer post.

BK-22 sheath or a spec ops sheath?

Just my Opinion, But If they made the sheaths any better the knives would not be so affordable.

Congrats on the new knife!

Kydex is $8 for a 3/32" 12"x12" sheet. You can have someone make you one for considerably less than $100.

The BK-22 package comes with the non-plastic sheath, which I think is how they should sell them all.
Also, the standard short Spec-Ops sheath will fit the BK-2 (just checked), and they're sometimes on sale for ~$25.
Look around, you'll find affordable quality. The knife itself is worth every dollar you paid for it.

I stitched the nylon along both sides and it was an improvement but it is still the weak link. It isn't a major issue for me as I place my left hand on the sheath when I drawn the blade so there isn't too much drama. I have thought about getting an after market sheath but the cost vs aggravation equation has tip the scales yet.

Thanks for the responses. I do like the idea of a kydex type sheath for the BK2. Normally I would prefer the nylon like on the BK9....which I love for that blade, but I really envisioned the 2 with kydex and horizontal carry.

I will check out a few sheaths online and see. Will also check out the spec ops.

I understand keeping the price down with a lesser sheath to an extent, but this is literally unusable. When you do snap it in place, it sounds like a 22 rifle going off (a little exaggeration.....not much though ;-) and to pull it apart is really dangerous. It takes quite abit of force.

Anyway....thanks for the suggestions. Will look into and post up what I decide.

I also have the BK2 with the plastic sheath with a Tek Lok installed. Not a huge fan of that sheath either (I'm presently working on a leather sheath for it). However, it will loosen up over time. Use the thumb ramp on the sheath to your advantage to pull the knife out one-handed. It took me a combination of both practice and the sheath loosening up to get it.

$100+ for a sheath?!?! More like $35 from Azwelke or most other forum supporting kydex makers... And you already have an attachment option so you are golden. I for one love the stock sheath it came with. The nylon attachment... no so much... I did a fold over paracord mod to it first to use the belt loop but ended up just scrapping the loop all together. Now it just has paracord on it and I usually just tuck it in a pocket. Yes it does retain very well but I am able to deploy mine with just thumb pressure. If yours is tight throw it in some boiling water, or hit it up with a hair dryer and give it a bit of a spread... About 5 minutes of your time. Let it cool and it should be a softer pull. Heck it should even break in more over time. Its not going to cut your thumb, it should be just fine.

BTW we love pics here and welcome to the fold!

Drill out one of the eyelets nearest the mouth of the sheath. Instant fix.

Here's my Spec Ops Combat Master. Fits...Like a Glove and won't break the bank. 25-30 bucks

Yeah. I'm a big fan of the SpecOps as well.
The BK11/14/24 with fold over kydex will fit in the front pouch too!

Thanks again for the responses. I will be toying with the stock sheath this weekend to see if I can't loosen it up some. The $100+ sheaths I was looking at were from grizzly and sky storm I believe.

I do want to keep the tek-lok installed to whatever sheath I use for horizontal carry. From what I could tell.....the spec ops does not accept the tec-lok.....maybe I'm wrong?

I actually just took a closer look at the spec ops......looks like that tek-lok might actually fit. Anyone know if the hole spacing on that sheath will line up with the tek?

After installing a tek-Lok and a pouch onto mine, I'm actually quite a fan of the stock sheath now!
To loosen up the blade retention, carefully pull the knife from the sheath just enough so that the halves are at their farthest point.
Then hit it with a hot blow dryer. I let it warm up for about 5 minutes then let it cool. I was then able to draw the knife safely with one hand while leaving blade retention very secure. After performing these mods, I couldn't buy a better sheath for my BK2.

For giggles, my BK2 rig.

I left my knife pulled halfway out over night. I have never had the ramp pinch my thumb, especially now that the sheath loosened.

mine was very difficult (as everyone's was) when I first got it, but pulling it out and putting it in repeatedly made it so it was easier. I'm sure I got used to it as well, but I think I may hit mine w/the hairdryer to loosen it up a bit as well!

Thanks again for the replies. I boiled the top of the sheath then placed a screwdriver in both sides of the opening lengthwise to spread it apart then let it cool for a few minutes. It now works perfect. I love it.

Tel-lok fits great and will be attaching an accessory pouch as well. Thanks iwouldhurtafly for the suggestion and thanks to the rest of you as well.
