As stated in the subject line, I recently received the first of two fixed blade Guntings. The version I received is the Rob Newton/Frank Olesen knife. This one is the five inch blade version serial number 25. The seven inch blade version will be here shortly (hopefully). It was need for testing and evaluation for a magazine article. According to Frank Olesen of Skunkworks and CSSD equipment director, these are the first FB Guntings released to people not associated with the knife industry. Blade steel is quarter inch 5160 (very stout) handles/scales are a black/green linen micarta with indexing points, overall length is eleven inches and the ramp even has a Spyderco hole in it. The knife includes a custom Skunkworks Kydex sheath. I would characterize this knife as one for heavy field use or combat, because it definitely is a fighter. I have a picture of both knives; however, it is in jpeg form. If any one could help me out with getting it posted, I would appreciate it.

Hi wpc, if you want to post a picture as a basic member, you will need to host it on a site (e.g., your website if you have one). Otherwise, you can email it to me (at the address in my profile), and I will post it for you, as I'm sure a lot of people have been anxious to see this one for a while.

I'd love to see that picture - though there's a strong possibility that I'll handle one of those knives tomorrow... :D

Here you go...the original picture was too big to post, so I clipped out the Guntings in Paint, then resaved it as a 16 bit jpeg with another graphics editor...The quality's not great, but you can at least get an idea what the knives look like.

No sweat. Great looking knives...I think the 5" version would be most useful.

Just curious,

What´s the hole for?

I got a Gunting so if anyone knows what it´s used for on a fixed blade please tell me.

thanks,
Colinz

No real function just for looks. According to Frank Olesen, Bram wanted to keep with the whole (get it) Spyderco theme of the round hole. Most people associate the Gunting knife with Spyderco so you get a hole in the fixed blade Gunting.

As I expected, I did get to handle not only the two models above, but a bunch of other knives a couple hours ago, during lunch with Bram. What a nice guy! Very knowledgeable, and passionate about his creations. It was really a pleasure meeting him face to face for the first time (not to mention all the mind-blowing designs he showed me).
I can tell you folks (without going into details) that there's a lot of great collaborations between Bram and some well-known knifemakers on the way. It will be worth the wait!

I agree. There is one in particular that I am anxious to hear more about. It involves a design with a company that makes really hard use knives and was founded by ex-military. Did you get to see that proto, Leo?

Leo,
Bram is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet,"Why,he even smiles while he demos on you"!Got to see & handle both knives when he was in Miami! Then ,he explaind some of how they worked, loved the 5"model! He really gets excited showing what's coming down the pike! I can't wait!!

Jim,

I couldn't agree more!
Bram and I spent a very pleasant afternoon going through his many projects. He sure is a gifted martial artist and cutlery designer. I look forward to meeting him again (good thing we're neighbors!).
Besides, that sushi was delicious! :D

Leo,

JIM

Leo: yup the sushi was great..glad they have al those box lunches there..you and Ray could force me to come back again..
thanks for all the nice comments about the designs and ideas...
taking Mary out tommorow for Sushi @ TODAI....its going to be great!

The hole is only for continuity..I like its look..I might change its shape...
The 5 inch is OK..but my baby is the 8 inch blade with a 7 inch cutting surface..Must be a throw back to loving Randall #1-7's...
These fixed blade ABANIKOs from Newton Olesen will cut through a bunch of things in their path..They are solid, cutters and fighters and they will do basic chores as well...

The Gunt-erabit is very cool..but the one some of you are waiting for seems to be the BFG model from that company that Strides to make great usable fixed blades...( gads what a bad pun!)Hey I think they're actually making the proto of the Gunterambit as well....???
you never know...I mean I need at least one to play with....OK Lancer & DB need one as well

Be safe all of you..Watch out for those sharp edges...

Bram

PS: ignore Jim..he wouldn't know good fresh fish if it leapt into his pocket!...hmmm of course then it wouldn't be fresh...
Hey Big guy..you ought to try it..Sushi is where its at!

Yeah, sushi rules! Jim, you oughta give it a try... ;)

And Bram, don't forget the TUSOK - that's a folder I'd love to have! :D

By all means, do come back... Hopefully, Ray will join us next time. He's a big Japanese food fan himself.

Leo
