I just got a Buck 309 Companion in the mail with the Dymondwood handles and I really love the knife size and the dymondwood sales but it has a ton of side to side play in the clip blade. I'm very new to traditional folders but the clip blade is the longer of the 2 right? The smaller blade, I think a pen blade, has the smallest amount of play but I wouldn't even say enough to complain about but the larger blade has more play than my Taiwan made Lightning d/a otf knife. I already sent Buck an email and just waiting to here back on what I should do from here. I've heard nothing but good things about their customer service so I'm not to worried about it just feel a little disappointed that my first experience with a Buck knife is going to result in me spending more money to send it to them and another week or two until I can carry it. :( This was going to be the knife I carried in my dress pants at work. I have a Case Peanut coming too which will be my first ever Case so I hope it turns out better with that knife! That's my rant but I was planning on ordering a couple more Bucks if I liked this one and now I'm not so sure. Kinda has me bummed out.

My 309 had no play at all. I hope Buck takes care of this for you. 309 is a joy to carry.

I still haven't been gotten a return email from their normal customer service email address on their website or from the jhouser one. I will give them a couple more days then just call their phone number I guess. Have you guys had more luck with contacting them through email or the phone?

Not the best answer for many. However, if you don't want to bother with sending it back; I have had good luck with putting ones like that into a well padded vise. Crank it down a bit and the blade play should be gone.

Yes, I know you shouldn't have to do that to a new knife, but it's an option.

I agree I shouldn't have to do that but at the same time I really don't want to pay to ship this knife back so I might just give that a shot. Hopefully it wont void the warranty if I attempt it and it still doesn't work though. I've been carrying the knife all day in my dress pants at work and I love it. It carries very nicely and I can't even tell it's there.

I just wanted to say thank you ohen cepel. I took your advice and put about 4 or 5 layers of paper between the knife and the vise and slowly tightened it down just a little bit at a time until I got rid of the blade play. The knife still opens and closes perfectly so it worked out great. The only down side I can see is that on both ends the pin is now sticking out ever so slightly from the bolsters. Not enough that you can really see it but you can feel it and lint will snag on it I noticed after a couple hours of carrying it. What would be the best way of smoothing this back down? My cousin is into metal polishing and has the buffing compound and all that so I could have him make it all shiny again. It's either that or I just figured I would carry it for a while and see if normal wear from pocket carry will maybe round those edges off or not. I'm really liking this little knife right now despite the fact that I had to mess with it to make it right. It carries very nicely in the change pocket of my jeans for the days I don't really feel like lugging around one of my larger folders.
