Well, you guys did it--I'm hooked on traditional knives now.

After posting my questions about where to start, I decided on a GEC Trapper in red jigged bone. (I also have an AG Russell Gunstock and Sowbelly on the way...)

I'm very impressed with the GEC--it definitely is a quality knife. I do admit though, as was mentioned in my initial thread, that fit and finish of similarly priced quality modern/tactical folders is better--but that could be due to the ability to more easily mold or fit artificial materials used for the scales.

There is nice tension in the backspring, and a great snap to the blades. I love the spey blade on this one.

I bought this one to carry in places where whipping out a tactical folder for use would raise eyebrows. The GEC will work perfectly, as it's elegant, well made, and nice to look at.

Although I don't yet know specifically which patterns I 'like', I know which patterns and set-ups I do NOT like. I have a bad feeling that this is just the beginning...

Here's a shot next to my old (dirty) Case Sowbelly:

Nice Trapper Eric. I like the way that blood red bone looks. I have pick me up one in those handles one of these days.

rosewood western trap, crushed seashell slim trap & snake slim trap. notice the blade differances in west. trap & slim trap.---dennis

Very nice! Are the handles the same size/shape? I like the "Eastern" version better--I think because it reminds me of a doctors knife, which I've always liked too.

The trapper is becoming one of my top three favorite patterns (thanks to GEC:D). They pretty much nailed it.

I actually prefer the slim blade to the western blade. The slimmer blade keeps the spine low when one blade is open, making it more comfortable to use. I think I actually like the look of it better too:D. To each his own:thumbup:.

one things for sure the slim trap triumphs when gutting fish, & cleaning squirrels & rabbits. i just like the crazy blade shapes on the western trap.---dennis---i never measured the handles but bet their identical
