The USPS guy just stopped by and dropped off my first khukuri, a 12" Koth made by Sgt. Karka. I've taken a few horrible quality pictures with a camera phone, as my friend is borrowing my digital camera for the day. I'll be sure to post some better ones later.

The question I had involves the sheathe that came with it. For some reason, I assumed even though it wasn't the standard leather sheathe it would still have a way to wear it... well it doesn't. I'm trying to figure out what I can do to be able to wear this thing on a belt, but I'm a bit stumped. Anyone else figure out a way to rig something up?

Other then that, I am VERY happy with my first HI purchase. I've yet to really test it out, but I will soon.

I think you are supposed to stick that kind in your sash.

Well, unfortunately, I don't think I own anything that would even be considered a "sash".

I'm going to try wrapping it in a few things, then attaching some loops of some kind on whatever I wrap it in. I just don't want to do anything permanent that would ruin this sheathe, as it is pretty nice.

It wouldn't be all that hard to make a superfrog for it--basically just a T-shaped piece of leather, the bottom part of the T folds over and gets stitched to form a belt loop, and the two arms on top of the T get holes punched in them and then wrap around the khuk and get laced up. Uncle Bill and Yangdu might have some spares laying around that they could send you as well.

Buy some rope. ;) :)

The superfrog idea will probably work.

I thought the little metal bump in the back of the sheath was a little thin for using to carry though.

If you don't have access to leather, and want to use it right away, you might be able to make something similar out of a plastic bottle or something similar. It should be flexible enough to do a reasonable job. Attach with ? super glue ? hot glue ? duct tape ? For that matter, you could probably make a reasonable frog with several layers of duct tape - make a belt loop and then tape it near the top of the sheath with a couple of wraps around. Not a long-term solution and you'll have lots of adhesive to remove, but for a blade this small it should work OK.

To clarify Josh's description - the T is upside down. When you fold the crossbar together to make the loop, the tip of the sheath goes down through the loop. The sheath gets larger toward the top, where you put the knife in. If your loop is sized correctly, the sheath won't be able to go all the way through. Look at some pics of the HI sheath - you'll see a little band of leather near the top, laced together. This is the crossbar of the T. It's held on just by friction, because the top of the sheath is too big to fit through.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the new khuk!

I've made several quick and dirty frogs by just using an old belt and some heavy fishing line or tie wire and a shoelace.
First, cut a section off the belt so that it just misses going around the circ. of the scabbard. I'd maybe stop a half inch shy of touching. you'll want a little gap so that when you tie the frog tight around the scabbard the leather has some stretching room.
I recommend at least two holes on each side of your frog so that it ties tight. If you are using the part of the belt with the holes, then you're halfway done. Just use a drill or an awl on a Swiss Army Knife to bore a couple more holes.
Before you lace the holes and tie it to the scabbard you're going to need a beltloop. You can simply take some heavy fishing line and sew a doubled over section of the belt to the frog, but i find that's kind of hard to do. My favorite way to do it is to punch a hole in the back of the frog where you want your beltloop, then punch another one about 1/2" up (depending onthe size of the belt you made the frog out of). Punch the same kinds of holes in the doubled over piece of belt. Feed a length of tie wire through the beltloop holes and frog and then back through the other holes in the frog and belt. Once you do that just twist the wire together as tight as possible. Snip off the sharp part with some wire cutters and bend the rest over out of way. Instant belt loop on your frog.
Wrap your frog around the scabbard and lace through a shoe lace. Tie it tight and you're done. Will it be pretty?...not in the least. Will it last forever?...probably not. Will it get you through the weekend with minimal effort and material?..works for me:D
If you want it to hold together a little better then you might use some Duco Cement or Superglue in between the layers of beltloop and frog.

Thanks for all the advice guys! After playing around with a few things I have finished my prototype leather frog. This was made out of some really crappy leather I found, and very thin rope. I cut the hell out of my finger making this, but it was well worth it. I'll probably end up making something else later today now that I know what to do. Again, thanks for the help!

Well, there ya go... still, I can't believe you don't have a sash.

Hey, wait! Quit throwin' stuff at me you guys!

All right, none of us has a sash... that I know of... at least I don't.

Rope belts prevail where I'm at but they clash with the khukuris.

I have two sash's, one for Gourd Dancing and the other goes to my Straight Dance outfit.:p ;) :D

that is a fun lil' knife....I got the blem - cracked one - in the mail.....boy is it cute!

Mine arrived yesterday too, and the translucent grey yak horn handle looks simply amazing with the black and silver scabbard. As for carrying I tried just sticking it under my belt and it seemed to do OK, with the metal hump doing a fine job keeping it from dropping through. A little flashy for everyday wear, though!

Back to the yak horn handle- it is simply gorgeous. Thanks Yangdu and Sgt. Karka!

May I suggest that you make a whole new sheath for it?
Let that kothimoda sheath be for special sash-wearin' occasions and let the other sheath be for everyday goat-killin' occasions.

Really, I think it would be a good idea. Dropping or scratching a kothimoda sheath is such a crime!

My Straight Dance outfit is a suit and tie.
My Non-Straight dance outfit is a silk flowered shirt and a thong.

I am having the Bladeforums.com member, Vess, who made the sheathe in the following image make mine.
