Just received my Lansky

It arrived today, not diamond stones, but does have the ultra fine grit stone included. Anyway, used it on a couple of junk knives first to get the hang of it and it did put a decent edge on them. Used it on my Kershaw and it did a fantastic job, it will easily shave hair. I still need to practice however. Tomorrow everything in the house with an edge will get sharpened!

I do need to change out the thumb screws on the stones for small Allen screws, which will allow me to use the full length of the stone. Will also change out the thumb wheel and the main screw on the clamp. I was disappointed in the cheap method of screwing the rods onto the stones, Allen screws would be best. I would also recommend putting a flat on the rod as well, to give the screw something better to bite into.

One other concern I have, how long will these stones last? I realize I was putting too much pressure on the stone while sharpening the first couple of knives, but it seems like they wear quick. Do they last?

Any other suggestion you can recommend?

Thanks....

I don't know how long the stones last but they are easy to flatten. I have a standard set that I bought right before I started sharpening free hand. It was an old set and several of the stones were well used with a deep bow in the middle. They had to be flattened. I asked the gentlemen and woman on this forum what to do. I was told to get a concrete paver stone. Splash a little water on it, enough to wet the entire top, and throw on a handful of sand. Then I just made circle with the stone, replacing the sand as needed and in about 20 minutes I had a flat stone again.

Also, on my original diamond set, just the act of tightening the screws eventually wore a flat spot on the rods. I like your idea to cut a flat spot better though.
BTW, when you get the new screws, would you post and let us know what you used, please?

Yes I will. I'll stop over Lowes later this morning, p/u the screws and post the info.

I have used the same Lansky and stones for about 15 years and sharpened a lot of knives. I have periodically flattened the stones on concrete, usually the loading dock out back of my printing company.

Some steels can do a real number on the stones. They are easy enough to flatten, But I bought the coarse and medium diamond hones to save wear on the stock stones.

I've been using the lansky for years (more like decades lol) and I actually prefer it to my edge pro sometimes. Depends on the knife. I can get some fantastic edges with it.

Just make sure you keep the rod straight to the stone. Practice make perfect.

Oh, and you can get strops for it too. I have 2 of them and it takes the lansky system to whole new level.

Jim.

I said I would post the screws I used holding the rods onto the stones. Today I went to HD and purchased a few different sizes, the one which fit absolutely perfect is called: set screw, socket, 10-24 x 1/4". It engages all threads and fits flush to the back of the plastic. Couldn't be more perfect. The skew number is 0 30699 73658 4. They cost $.80 for a bag of two.

I also swapped out the thumb wheel also, but it needs a 1/2" set screw. I got the 3/4" one, which was a smidge too long, so for today I put the red thumbscrew back into the clamp. After the roads a cleared a little more, I'll go pick up a shorted set screw for the clamp too.

Now with the set screws I. The stones holding the rods in place, I get full use of the stone right up the the end instead of an inch from it.

Try the small mod, I think you'll find it really improves the system.

Now to go get those strops........

Also got a Lansky Diamond Kit. My second after the deluxe kit. I felt I needed it after I got my first "super steel" knife. I haven't tried it on S30V (WRKT BAckpacker) yet but the speed at which is sharpens up 14C28N (New Kershaw Leek) and 1095 (Old Fav BK14) is amazing. Literally, 5-7 minutes excluding the time it takes to set up. I ordered the UF Yellow Hone with it and strop on my home made strop and the edge created is amazing.
EDIT: the hones arrived completely flat. I checked them on a glass top table and I was unable to slide a piece of paper between the hone and glass.
