Hey guys,

Just received my brand spankin' new CQC-7v in the mail and I am loving it so far. Good solid knife. Blade is razor sharp, V-grind but chisel edge, tan handles are really gorgeous and the g-10 is the roughest I have ever felt.

Here's what I just wanted to ask:

1. Opening and closing is a bit rough. It's slightly jerky towards the end of the closing motion, when the blade is about to go back into the handle. Is this just part of the 'new knife' feel and will go away after X amount of openings? Or will I need to take it apart and do something to the pivot?

2. How do I keep the pivot in place? It's already moved a bit from 24 hours ago and was hearing a lot about Teflon tape and Loctite.. What do you guys recommend?

3. What maintenance do you recommend for the knife? Do I have to take it apart and oil some stuff? Or will simply wiping the blade with a rag and some crc lubricant do the trick?

Thank you and Ill try and get some pics here tomorrow!

1. As with most knives, the CQC is no exception. I have a 7B, and it started off a little rough, but now it's smooth as ever. Still feel strong, and never loose.

2. I wouldn't worry too much about the pivots. I have several Emersons, and have found that once issue #1 is resolved, the pivot rarely moves. I have lucky for me, all my slotted screws go from 12-6, so I can tell when they're moving, but rarely do. The only time I have issues is with Waved models. Just a little more wear and tear.

3. I would open it up (be mindful of which side the washers came from ), clean it, and then put a little oil on the blade by the pivot cut-out. People will go on and on about how the washers don't need any lube; this is very true, because they don't. Doesn't mean it won't help though. I have to stress just a LITTLE bit. This should soften everything up.

Have fun, enjoy, and be safe.

I've lightly loctited my pivot screws because mine(roadhouse) moved about a month after it was purchased mine jumps that last little bit into the handles my CQC 7B does that as well, I've just assumed that was normal due to the ball detent on the blade, as far as wiping the blade down I wipe my stone wash roadhouse with a light layer of CLP once every week or two or when it gets soaked(like I jumped in a pool with it or the like)

I use a small strip of teflon tape (less than .5") and that keeps the pivot settled on my Emersons, without having to loctite it.
Contrary to some advice, I also squirt a tiny amount of WD40 into the pivot and it really smooths up the action significantly. (Do strip and clean it before - sometimes theres gunk in there.)

If you want ultimate smoothness you can heat the metal parts with a hairdryer then lube with Militec1.

Thanks for all the replies. I completely disassembled my knife and cleaned the pivot area since there was what looked like metal shavings around it. They were definitely rough and coarse to the feel so I cleaned that area thoroughly. Little lube on the pivot area and some teflon tape on the pivot screw. I then tried to put the knife together..

Now this is another problem that I came across when putting the knife together.. It seems like threads on the backspacer are stripped! The forward pivot side screw and the rear liner side screw are just sitting there, rotating freely in place no matter what I do. I thought what the hell? This is a 48 hour old knife on it's first disassembly with a semi-competent owner so it shouldn't be doing this. I couldn't get both screws out without disassembling the knife and pulling them from the backspacer.. wtf is going on? Do I have to teflon tape these as well?

I am really disappointed if this is the case. I don't want my knife being held together by teflon tape but I tried anyway, the pivot side screw sits fine and tight but the other liner side rear screw still turns. I live outside the USA so I really don't want to pay the ridiculous shipping cost to get it back to Emerson. What can I do? Can I write EKI for a replacement backspacer and some screws??

The backspacer isn't actually threaded - only the opposite liner side, which sounds like the thread has been stripped. The last time it happened to me I had to send the whole knife in (I was also living overseas) and it was returned fully replaced. Yes it sucks for postage cost, but best to CALL them (don't email) and see what they can do.

It can happen that the threads get stripped by overtightening / skipping the thread when tightening... so do be careful. It could also be a lemon... you just never know, and occasionally Emerson QC is spotty. My friend's CQC7V has a pivot screw which barely engages the pivot.

If you contact them it will be resolved, but sadly at additional cost. They might send you a liner, but that's doubtful.

For me getting a new Emerson is like getting a new gun. I have to completely break it down, clean it, oil it and reassemble it before i first use it. Then like my guns, i'll put about 250 rounds through it before i worry about sighting it in or fine tuning the sites if they are adjustable - i.e. open and close it, wave it and break it in before worrying about the pivot screw. After the first cleaning, find the pivots sweet spot and just use your thumnail to keep it there. If after its fully broke in and your still finding that the pivot screw is moving too much for you to manage with your thumbnail then you could use a little teflon tape - i recommend teflon tape over loctite because it's easy to re-do when you take it apart for cleanings. Congrats on your new Emerson!
