Hey guys, i just bought my first spyderco sharpmaker after finding and reading this forum. I have a slight problem though. WHen i go to insert the grey grey ceramic stone in one of the 40 degree holes it won't go. It will go if i have it set the sharpen on the flat edge so that the triangular edge is at the rear, but if i turn it to use the triangle edge as in the first step, i can't get the rod to drop in all the way (maybe only 3/16") I'm worried that if i start to chisell away a bit of plastic to make it drop i might alter the angle a bit. I also don't want to press down too hard because i don't want to break the rod. the white rods go in fine, but the grey one's must be a bit bigger. Anyone have this problem before?

Mine are also a little tight in some configurations, requiring some pushing. Yours sound like they may be even tighter. As for breaking the rods, ceramics are very strong in compression. So as long as you direct the force through the length of the rod...

Ok, so i used some pretty good force and it went in approximately half way, and now it's jammed in there. Now i'm really worried about breaking it while i'm trying to get it out of the base. I suppose after a few times of doing this it will loosen up and work fine. One other note, i noticed that while sharpening with the flats one the white rods it looks like i'm not able to touch part of the stone. I think it may be slightly warped or raised on the two edges of the corners to prevent it from contacting the flat correctly. I wonder if it's bad enough to contact spyderco and get a replacement. I also noticed that my package was not heat sealed in two of the contact spaces so it makes me wonder if this package had been opened before. I sure hope not. I bought it from Lebaron in Canada.

Ok, i got the ceramic stones so that they will fit. Now i will just have to look into how warped these white stones are.

If it is just a mild out of shape, you can rub them together a bit (careful to avoid tapping - we're rubbing here) to wear them a bit into shape.

Cool screen name.

Ok, i'll try rubbing them together. They aren't that far out of alignment so it should work. Thanks for all the help.
