Just saw a strange old Case

It looked like an old worn out 33 pattern serpentine pen , but had a bail attached to the center pin.

Anyone ever seen one like this, why would they wanna put the bail there ?

I have a Couple ideas, but that's just a strange place for the bail.

Lessen the chance of closing the blade on the bail?
Agree, that is a strange place to put a bail. I wonder if was done by the factory?
 
Yeah that's the one.

Too bad it's pretty much worn out.

The tang stamp isn't even legible so It'd probably be hard to tell how old it is.
 
Bail was added, probably for a watch chain or the like.

You can get an approximate age by the shield.
 
I figured it was added, you can see they seem to have just snapped it on over the center pin.
It certainly doesn't look like the pin actually goes through the bail.
