Just saw Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin in The Edge again on FX tonight. Forget how much I liked that movie. Does anyone know what the knife was that Alex gave to Anthony? The box reads "Stearns & Harrington".
Thanks
Mike

PS That bear still scares me.

That is one of my all time favorite "survival" movies, and Bryan Lyttle's knives are on my "someday" list!

On a sad note, the bear in The Edge was Bart a Kodiak used it several movies.

Windwalker, Pacific International Enterprises, 1980
Clan of the Cave Bear, Warner Brothers, 1984
The Bear, Tri Star Renn Productions, 1987
The Great Outdoors, Universal, 1988
Lost in the Barrens, 1989
Giant of Thunder Mountain, 1990
The Great American West, IMAX, 1991
White Fang, Disney, 1992
On Deadly Ground, Warner Brothers, 1993
Walking Thunder, 1993
Yellowstone, IMAX, 1994
Red River, Karvkeva Productions (French), 1994
Legends of the Fall, Tri Star, 1995
The Edge, 20th Century Fox, 1996
Meet the Deedles, Disney, 1997

Bart died of cancer in 2000 at the age of 23.

If your interested, you can read more about him here.

Excellent link, Last Confederate. My thanks.

I "met" Bart once, years ago. I was working on a movie lot and he was there, for a commercial I think. To say I was awed in his presence is an understatement. There was no doubt in my mind who was the superior creature at that moment! And he was sitting down; Lord knows what I might have done had he been on his hind legs. I probably would have worshipped him as some kind of benevolent (I hope) diety.

I like "The Edge," too. But after meeting Bart, seeing him as a vicious antagonist in that movie was a little unbelievable. He was awesome, to be sure. But when he looked at me, his eyes showed a heart of gold.

The Edge may not have been a blockbuster, but I certainly enjoyed watching it. It sure does give an appreciation of what our prehistoric ancestors had to deal with when they weren't at the top of the food chain (literally).

I could give a huge list of reasons why I like this movie, but the main one is the knife. While it is a fancy custom, it is basically a common folding hunter and it's nice to see something other than a rambo knife in a survival movie.

I agree. One very positive aspect of the film is the way the knife is portrayed--as tool, and not as a weapon.

With the knife, Anthony Hopkin's character was able to do a myriad of things, such as sharpening stakes, etc., which aided in their survival.

How often does one see that these days in popular entertainement outside of MacGyver??

After seeing that knife in the movie this weekend, it moved me to put away my Benchmade 154 cm for awhile and take out the Buck Prince I was given a few years back. Must admit it is taking some getting used to to open a knife with two hands again.

This movie did a good job of showing that a knife is tool. This is a movie that even the most anti knife types would have to strecth to find any negative aspects to the way the knife was used.

The only fault I found was that they did lots of cutting without having to resharpen it. Maybe I missed that part

Yeah, this movie is what I blame for my Buck 110 custom collection fetish!, It was wanting to have a knife "like" the one in the movie taht got me to order my first Elk handled 110.....4 knives later.......
