Got these out for a pic for another discussion and thought I would post them here as well. I can only do so many "standard" restores/rehangs without getting the itch for something fun.

This is my Oak shield(still have not done the rawhide edging), my three HB forge hawks, camp, shipbuilder no poll and shipbuilder with poll and two modified hatchet heads. The long one is 31" and 1lb 12oz, the shorter is 22" 1lb 6oz. Both heads and handles are repurposed. the short one had a pretty rough condition head and the tongue on the boys axe handle was chewed up beyond use but had a nice profile and swell on the handle.

The shield is Oak tongue and groove. 5/8" in the center down to around 3/8" or less in places at the edge. Still heavy but brick solid. It was laminated on the back with glue and linen and has oak staves crossing the planks. Hraethigaldur carved on front and Aegishjalmur painted on the back.

Nice shield! When I was a kid we would get wooden barrel tops from someplace, do not remember where, and cut up old leather belts , then nail those leather pieces to the back, One your forearm went thru the the second strap you held with your hand. John

I need to make 2 more shields, one 32" and one 18" and much lighter. The will be center grip styles like this one.

I want to make a longer handle and mount one of the shipbuilder hawks axe style. I love the little lightweight hatchet heads.

Nice, I used to use the metal trash can lids with the handle on them for a shield and a tomato stake for a sword. My dad didn't like that though. Nice collection,

I think all us boys just never completely outgrow adventure. I used trash can lids as well and any stick I could find.
Tomatoes and walnuts in the hull were hand grenades. We had to be creative and I think we were more healthy and outgoing for it.

Later we used bb guns- I do NOT recommend anyone do such a thing. For my son, I bought enough airsoft guns and protective gear for us and his friends. Great fun as long as eyepro and minimum distance are followed.
