Just some thoughts on handle materials

Hey guys,

Before we get started let me tell you up front that I'm not knocking such materials as Micarta, G-10, Ti, etc. I use some of these on my knives as well.

But, have you noticed that the tried and trued materials that used to be found on just about all knives are slowly fading away? I mean such materials as leather, wood, and even stag in some cases.

I'm mostly talking about knives that are going to be used and abused here. Sure, Materials such as the new stainless steels, Talonite, Dendritic, Cpms, etc, are all fabulous steels. And Micarta, G-10, Carbon Fiber, Ti, etc. make fabulous handles.

But, what about the millions of GIs who carried 1095 with leather handles during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam? Do you think the torture those knives was put through was not enough to make these materials stand out? How many lives have been saved from the KaBar USMC Fighting knives? Now how many lives have been saved with the new exotic steels with exotic handles?

All, I'm saying is that in our search for the most new and exotic materials we can find, let's not forget the materials that we already know have the "RIGHT STUFF"

Guess I should have said knifemaking materials on the subject instead of handle materials....

I'll get off my soapbox now.

I bought the new Tactical Knives issue today, and was glad to see an article titled,
"440c: The popular Champ That Isn't About To Retire!" It is a great article saying that this steel isn't the latest, but still a great performer and the steel that all others are measured against! Cool!

It is also the steel that I have decided to learn the art of knifemaking on, and I am having lots of fun with it! Traditional materials are great!
