Just something to think about/discuss

What do you guys think is the possibility of benchmade switching to CPM-154 from 154CM?

Do you think it would be cost effective? Do you think it would raise the cost of their knives?

Just an idea, if there is already a thread on this I apologize

Doubt they would, but we can always hope.

Purely speculation but my guess is CPM-154 and 154cm likely register as the same thing to the average Joe, even though CMP-154 is superior. So if Benchmade was going to make a switch my guess is they would go for a similarly priced steel like S30v instead because of marketing.

Spyderco used to use CPM-154 in their Golden Colorado models and later switched to S30v, such a bummer. I personally feel CPM-154 is a better steel and consider this a downgrade.

i understand where you are coming from, i mainly just bring this up because i feel paying almost $150 dollars for a 707 a slight upgrade in blade steel could be in order

The 707 is a nice knife. Personally I wouldn't pay $150 for one. They can be found cheaper with some searching.
That said, I doubt we will see them switch, but who would have thought we would see Ritter Grips with M390

Negative. The steel Spyderco used was 154CM, I have not seen them use the CPM version yet on anything aside from the $400 Para2 with the funky blade with S90V. From a performance perspective, I'd say the higher carbide volume in S30V would be noticeable by someone that has experience with both steels. That said, CPM-154 is different than 154CM. The way they are made as well as the final product is quite different.

My bad you're right it was 154cm. Both my Manix and PM2 are S30v...don't know why I had it in my head the older versions were CMP 154.

I'd settle for S30V being the replacement for their models with 154cm. I don't hate 154cm though.

Although CPM-154 is better than 154cm, it is doubtful that CPM-154 is better than S30V (Which is actually CPM-S30V) where S30V contains more Vanadium and like metals that makes carbide formation in smaller grain size.

Don't get me wrong, I like 154cm, but it is older alloy after all.

I third S30V. Benchmades 154CM is just not one of my favorites. I've found myself overlooking or actively ignoring knives that I would otherwise love if it wasn't for the steel they use. I'd prefer the carbon steel on my Morakniv #2/0. My Tanto full size grip and MDP mini grip both miss out on pocket time, simply due to my 940 taking and keeping a keener edge. I sharpen my 940 once weekly (barring heavy use) and it probably ends up sharper than my grips... At the end of the cycle.
I may just be picky but Benchmade is my favorite manufacturer and I still resent them for their abhorrent love for 154CM.
I know manufacturing cost blah blah....but I barely paid more for my 940 than I did my 707.
Just musing here
