Well after struggling by with a piecemeal (at best) sharpening arsenal, I broke down and placed some orders in the last few weeks. Keith at HA has me a bench hone, and ALL the goodies to go with it on the way. Some of the films, boron carbide paste, diamond spray, felt blocks and at least one piece of every kind of leather he stocks just to experiment with. And he even threw in a few goodies as well!! Great guy to deal with, and as he said, I should be busy for a while. Also got a set of 4 DMT D8 Dia-sharps (X/C/F/E) with a holder. I'm holding off on the Waterstones for now, those (very likely Shapton Glasstones) and a XX DMT Diasharp plate are all on deck for tax season haha. Tell me what you think!! :D

I bet they love you. You might want to hold off on the water stones until you get a good grasp on what you got now,. You dont want to be the guy that puts racing tires on a pinto.

My thoughts exactly. I didn't break down and order all my goodies here until I felt I had enough of a grasp on freehanding that better equipment would be a benefit. And yes, I know, you can sharpen a knife on a cinder block and cardboard...but who wants to when they make Dia sharps?

The euphamism you said there at the end was all too fitting, I used to work in the high performance car industry, I know that guy all too well. And his distant cousin, the one who puts $100 all-seasons on his 630 rear wheel horsepower Z06 and wonders why he can't keep it stuck :D

That's all? :)

JK,
you should have lots of fun.

What stone did you get from HA? finishing stone?

He put me an Arkansas Black in there, and a ceramic rod. I wanna see what I can do going from the DMT E to the microfilm sheets on glass (though not sure on the grit of that boron carbide he put in there?), then on to the strops. I guess the Black stone will be nice on some of my softer Western kitchen knives or cheaper pocket stuff, but something tells me I'd have a rough time with the super steels. If its too big of a jump, be a good excuse to lay in a few Shaptons (say a 4k and 8k). We'll see...what do you think?

Going to a 1 micron strop after even the xf DMT will give you hair splitting edges. I've heard shaptons are great and would like to get some myself one day but my DMT XXF does so well at finishing its hard to justify another stone just for the sake of a better mirror polish. Most steels I sharpen are super steels anyways so using anything less than diamonds is not practical for me.

Very nice. Can't wait to get my stuff. I figured it'd be enough to do anything I need to really. I knew the DMT's would be critical with my propensity towards the harder steels.
