Hello All, I'm just starting out collecting customs knives. I have used and collected Lone Wolf knives over the years but now that there no more I have been looking for something to satisfy the itch so to speak. I'd like to add one a month, or every other month. I'm mainly interested in Bowies. I know this is probably been posted a thousand times but does anyone recommend a maker? I like horn or wood handles(olive, walnut or KOA).. I'm lucky enough to be able to put away $75 to $100 a week for my hobby without sacrificing anything needed for me or my family. I know it's not alot of money for some, but it is for me. Any opinions or recommendations? I'd like to buy something that appeals to me and also will retain value for when I pass them on to my kids. Thanks

Welcome to the world of custom Bowies

I believe they are the pinnacle of the art

You are right on time

Right around X Mas the best Bowie contest will be held on here

Sit back and get ready to see some of the worlds best

You will learn a lot and see some of the top makers

You can get an idea of prices and make some educated decisions

Hi Pete,

welcome to this forum. Your question is valid and you will find plenty of opportunities in this forum and in the Knifemaker's Fixed blades for sale.

The list of quality makers is too vast for me to start, and everyone has a favorite. :)

I see you are in MA. I HIGHLY recommend you visit the NCCA show upcoming in Marlborough on Fe 9th. You may handle knives and speak directly with makers and dealers who are always helpful.

My Gallery thread above is mostly higher end knives, but you can get a taste of form in there.

Good luck. Others will give you specifics too.

Thanks to all who have replied. Great advice on checking out the contest here and gaining a bit of knowledge about what is out there, by who, price, etc... Jim, I'm in western mass right next to the Vermont and the NY border so Marlborough is a haul from here. But honestly I am going to try to attend. There is nothing better than seeing different knives in person. I'm thinking if I go I'll bring home my first custom piece from there. Thanks Again all!! Happy Holidays

Certainly, if you see something that really specks to you, then buy it......BUT take the advice of the posters before me and look , listen, and ask questions, before you jump off prematurely. I promise you there is no shortage of great knives and makers, so take a little time and study your lesson!

If you happen to buy one without a sheath......well I know how to take care of that:D

Yeah Pete, that could be a two-hour drive. But worth every minute once you drive away. :)

I drove to my first NCCA show and COMPLETELY fell in love with Handmade/Customs. The NCCA people are among the best you will meet.

The contest thread starts on Boxing Day? What a highlight.

Good luck.

Jim
