Hi my name is John, and I live in Brooklyn, N.Y. I was reading up on starting to whittle, and I would like to purchase an inexpensive pocket folding knife to start whittling. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Flat ground G10 spyderco Delica or the regular delica might be a good start but if I wanted to whittle I would use a mora.

Any good little pocket knife with a comfortable grip/handle should be fine to start out. Later on you can experiment with different brands/styles and see what you like.

For a fixed blade, knifenut1013's right - a Mora would be great.

thx - cpr

try a SAK (swiss army knife) they are great, easy to carry, do a great job and you get lots of other tools in them.

Writer Chris Lubkemann ("The Little Book of Whittling") suggests a use what you have approach: two bladed knife with a comfortable handle and a large blade between 2" - 2&1/2" and a small 1&1/2" blade. The small blade will be the one you use the most. Super steels not required but a thin blade profile is a must. SAK's, Bucks, Case, Schrade, etc. all fit the bill. Most carvers/whittlers have a strop that they constantly use to keep the blade razor sharp as they work.

Have fun .

Welcome to BladeForums, John!

Rough Rider knives are made in China. Several forum members have been pleasantly surprised at the good quality for the low price. And they make a number of styles.

Some of the Buck knives are made in China and have also been commented upon as being well made and inexpensive.

The American-Made Bucks (301, 303, 309) are a bit more expensive, they are good folders, and they are made in the USA.

There is an entire forum devoted to traditional pocket knives here, and a number of those folks are avid whittlers. You might hang out over there a spell and do some reading. Very friendly folks.
