HELLO! MY NAME IS RANDY, AND I AM JUST GETTING STARTED IN KNIFE MAKING. I'M CURRENTLY WORKING ON A FIXED BLADE KIT(1ST ONE) AND HAVE ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE MY NEXT BLADE FROM FLAT STOCK. CUT,SHAPE,GRIND,HEAT TREAT AND TEMPER MYSELF. FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES AND RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND 3 POSSIBLE MATERIALS TO START WITH. 01,5160 OR 1095. WHICH WOULD BE THE EASIEST TO LEARN ON? BACKGROUND INFO ON ME. I'VE BEEN WELDING AND FABRICATING SINCE 1997. I HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF WORKING WITH MOST METALS AND UNDERSTAND MOST TERMONOLOGY IN DISSCUSING WHAT AND WHAT NOT TO DO. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU.

YOU DONT NEED TO USE THE CAPS LOCK
that said get some O1 and read all you can around here lots of good info even if the search only works like 1% of the time
lots of good people here that are willing to help just ask if its a dumb ? we ll let you know:D thats not likely
we all had to learn at some point
its a fun place and ther are things im sure you know about that we dont so share when you can
good luck with knife making

Thanks Sweany
I Manage A Trailer Repair Shop(dump Trailers,dry Vans,refer Trailers
And The Sort). I Found The Info To Be Useful On That Site. Will The
Hardening And Tempering For 5160 Spring Steel Be The Same For 01
Or Does Something Change In The Process? I Decided To Use 01 Because All I Have Read Say's It Can Be Hardened Over And Over As Long As You Don't Overheat It. Any Other Info I Can Use Will Be
Appreciated. Thank You, Randy.

O1 and 5160 are both good starter steels.1095 takes a bit of practice, but is an excellent steel. Most simple carbon steels can be re-hardened many times as long as you don't severely overheat it.Learning how hot is hot enough and where too hot starts is the science of HT.
Welcome to BF.
