Hello Blade Forum, :)

I'm a fairly new member of the forum, but this is my first post. My interests in knives has grown in the last couple of months, and I'm just starting to collect. For my birthday, a few weeks ago I bought myself a Benchmade Mini- Onslaught 746BK, and a few day ago i ordered a Benchmade Bedlam 860. I'm very excited, but I can't help to think of what will be my next purchase. I've been on the forum non-stop looking for my next addition, but can't decide. I'm looking for something I can use as an EDC, or something to keep on hand if needed. I'm asking anybody for recommendations, as I've said I'm just a beginner and hope to learn a lot with the help of the forum, and from its members. So, please make any recommendations you feel a small time collector must have in his arsenal.

Thanks in advance,
Denko

Hi Denko, and welcome to Bladeforums! Looks like you have started off with some very nice knives. If you like BM, then I would check out the 275 Adamas, and the 810 Contego. Both are under the $150 mark, and WELL worth it.

Here's a pic of my two, Adamas on the left and Contego on the right;

An assisted opening blade such as an SOG Flash I/II is good for EDC. I also would think the Benchmade Griptilian would be a good EDC blade, but I don't know what steel it's made of.

I love Benchmade, and they have plenty of other models you should check out (e.g. 940, 943, 710, 950...) but you may or may not want to consider starting to branch out and giving Spyderco or Kershaw/Zero Tolerance a try since they have a ton of fantastic models. Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is one of the most-recommended knives (on this site at least), and for good reason: it kicks ass.
A lot of different knives fulfill the role of "EDC", but the definition and requirements of EDC change from person to person and sometimes day to day...

If you want to explore some more Benchmade, definitely recommend the Griptilian and something assisted like the Barrage. Larger Benchmade, Adamas and Contego are great recommendations. If you want to venture out a little, Paramilitary2 or Manix2 for a couple different lock styles or Kershaw Blur and Leek for assisted EDC goodness. I must warn you about ZT though. They are extremely addictive. Oh the options are almost endless! You are in for a treat if you haven't owned or handled that many knives yet. Good luck and welcome to BladeForums!

I would take a look at the Zero Tolerance line up, the 0300 series is great. And the 0560 in Elmax is very much loved. The Kershaw Blur is worth a good look, and there is a S30V version if you are wanting a better steel for around $80.

The Kershaw G10 speedbump is worth a look too. The blade offers a lot utility, very good knife, stud lock is a bit different but I like it, great one hand operation. Can be had for $50 on here in the sale are every now and then.

Welcome to the forum!

My favorite EDC is the Benchmade 585 mini barrage. A very well made Axis assist knife that is not imposing.
The Mini Griptillian is also a favorite amongst many.

Thanks, for these kick-ass suggestions. At the moment when purchasing my bedlam, I swear I was looking at the 275 Adamas, but ending up going with the bedlam due its price which I found at 65% off its retail value. Never had considered the 810 which after some research I have added it to my wish list. Thanks again!

I have so read so many good things about the ZT knives. What are some of their best features, and are they worth the money? thanks for the great suggestions.

ZTs are great tanks of a knife. They are over built, tough, and made to last. ZT 0350, 0300, 0550s are worth a look.

I love my ZT 0350 and Spydie PM2 just about equally, both are worth taking a good look at.

I would get a Benchmade 940 or a ZT 550. It is only the start of things to come!!Your collection will GROW and GROW and GROW!!!! Good Luck! Kevin :D:D:D

For edc I would reccomend the kershaw leek! It's an awesome little thing and won't break the bank. It's so thin you'll forget you are carrying it!

Buy BLADE magazine and click on all the websites. You will see lots to like. Visit any knife shows in your area.

Pick up some of the following

Opinel #10 with the corkscrew in the handle or a #8 without
Small Victorinox swiss army with some tools you find useful
Leatherman Micra
Svord Peasant
Cold Steel trail hawk
Gerber Fiskars axe
Folding saw
Spyderco Sharpmaker OR go full on with a paper wheel sharpener. Check the sharpening subforum for more info.
Khukri from Sarco
SOG Flash
Ken Onion Scallion
Pick your $30 and under flipper from Kershaw
2-3 different Mora knives, whatever configuration you like.
Victorinox paring knives to be used as steak knives
Hardwood end-grain cutting board
Hardwood steak plates

If you bought ALL of the above, you're in for about $800. I do believe you're pretty much covered with those selections. After that, you can get creative.

Chef's knife
Filleting knife
Skewers
Bowie
Arkansas Toothpick
Some kind of sword
Bobby Brantons
A bayonet for a rifle or shotty you already own
Pair of EMT shears

Don't get me started on shaving
Double edge razor, blades, a brush, shaving cream in a tube, oils, styptic pencils, colognes and aftershaves, balms, etc.

Watch this spin out of control when you decide to buy a nice lawn mower, meat slicer, food processor, blender, Kitchenaid, a new grill, a smoker, a flashlight, chessboard, it just goes on and on. Quality above all things, and using simple tools to perform a complex task. It's fun.

Good luck!

The most important investment is probably in a #2 Dixon-Ticonderoga and a sheet of blank copier paper. What do you want to do with a simple tool? Do you want to open your mail and wine like a gentleman, or do you break down boxes for a living?

Thank You all for your suggestions. They all seem great, and worth looking into further. Today, my Benchmade Bedlam 860Bk has just arrived, and I can't get enough of it. Such as kick-ass knife overall. The prussian/ modified bowie blade is scary looking, and the large G-10 skeletonized handle feels just right. The 154CM steel used for the bedlam is just an added bonus. This knife is just a beast. :)

Again really thankful for the suggestions, and if you anyone has any further opinions I would love to hear them

Denko

Like viper89 said, they are just overbuilt tanks and fun to boot. You'd probably enjoy a Kershaw Speedbump like BobSig suggested if you are into cool blade shapes as well. The assisted versions "thwack" open with authority.
