These are questions I posted in "Knife Reviws and Testing". Just because only Richard answered me, I am posting them here again:

"A friend of mine owns an Al Mar SERE, fixed blade, full tang with scales in micarta and the "De Oppresso Liber" motto on the guard.
He bought it in 1988.

He likes it very much, and asked me the opinion of other Forumites about this knife.

He says the steel is an AM6 alloy (I asked it three times to be sure).

If you think is a valuable knife, made when Al Mar was still forging, he could buy another one from his cousin, still NIB."

Al Mar designed knives that he had produced in Japan by various cutlery factories much the same way SpyderCo does. There does seem to be alot of interest in Al Mar knives from a collectable point of view lately. There are still places on line that have his older models for sale and the prices seem quite high.

OK,

but someone has made a serious use of it, or has an opinion of its value (not meaning money, how it is as a knife)?

I have a SERE/Attack. The SEREs were made in several sizes and the one I have is the biggest (close to 25cm). It is too large to be used as an everyday pocket knife but I use it while in the woods. The blade is AUS6A. Very corrosion resistant. Not as hi-tech as 420V or Talonite but not as bad as some people say. Tricky to sharpen. Not hard, just a bit tricky. The knife is very heavy. Feels more like a fixedblade when you use it, and that was the intention from the beginning. To make a "fixed blade that folds". The lock is as firm as a bank-vault. Better than most folders of today. Including Benchmade & Spyderco. Very well balanced. The handle is so large that you can move your hand 1,5" front or back for optimum balance. I have used this knife to chop down small trees (many times), 3-4" thick, without any signs of use on the knife. Still as firm as it was when new. I´d say that
$2-300 is a resonable price for this blade in mint condition. The fact that I got mine for $70 makes me even happier. I use an
Al Mar Denali for everyday pocket use. I have to mention this as it is one of the best and most beautiful pocket knifes ever designed. I bought it from Peter at Fallkniven and he too admitted to it being one of the alltime greatest. Me - Al Mar lover? Naaah.... Now, go get that SERE!
