I had never read this on any of the threads concerning this conversion. If you're like me and God forbid, have an "old" Mini Maglite, (and some of you must have as we "old timers" tend to hang onto things), and want to do this conversion, IT WON'T WORK! I ordered the module. After receiving it, low and behold, it only works with the "new" Mini's that have the two pin-hole lamp bases. I don't know when this change occured in the Mini Maglites. Be forewarned that if you have an older Mini, it won't work and you'll have to spring for a new model which, (of course), will add significantly to the cost of the conversion.

The Opalec website tells you that older mags don't work with the mod.

But I've also heard that it might work anyway. It should be a looser fit. Maybe some tweaking will make it work.

I have an older style mini-mag (10-11yrs old + matches description in instructions of old style) and I did put the Opalec unit in. It works, but seems to have little travel when you twist the bezel for on/off function. YMMV.
I will probably buy a new mini in something other than black, put the Opalec in that and put the old mini back in my range bag.

I have converted two old style mini-mags with no problems.

Reports on the Candlepowerforums.com indicate the old ones work - I don't recall seeing any reports that someone could not get it to work.

I would look it over carefully and see if you are missing something.

The main issue is the old ones are more prone to breakage due to the fit.

Using a tailcap like the following will eliminate that problem:

Mini Maglites sell for less than $7.00 at Target. I think that the Opalec NewBeam is such a good product that it warrants buying a new Mini Maglite if you don't have one.
