Just tried “regular” oil in Sebenza, wow!

Cleaned out my only CRK (a well loved large 21 Insingo) today. I decided to try out some Benchmade blue lube instead of the usual florinated grease. Feels like a different knife, way smoother while still maintaining a hydraulic feel. Definitely less friction going on.

I’m thinking when the time comes again to wash it out (soap and hot water is my go-to with folders) I can skip the takedown and add fresh lube to the pivot if I’m feeling lazy.

Anyone else experiment with something other than the recommended grease?

I have tried various lubes but the CRK grease gives me the most consistent results without attracting grit to the pivot area.

I use either Lps or mineral oil in my small Sebenza. Lps is slightly better than mineral oil .
But if you are going to use your knife for food preparation. Use mineral oil as it is non toxic.
Just get a pint at drug store. For application use a oiler , like a titan precision oiler .
A drop,on each side of the bushing . Just stay off the lock bar .

For giggles, I put a drop of nano-oil on each side of the washer (small inkosi insingo, hasn't been taken a part for at least 6+ months and has been my EDC) and my experience is very similar to yours. I'm not sure how long it will last, but I like it.

Can a 1/4 a drop of oil really be all that toxic?

No :)

When Chris Reeve used to be on here, he said the grease was essential to the knife's design. It both lubricates and protects the pivot assembly from corrosion.

Grease is supposed to last longer than oil. In other words, it will keep your pivot lubed and protected for a longer time. Same thing with firearms.

Oils and other treatments like BreakFree/CLP work very well but you'd have to repeat the treatment at more regular intervals than grease.
