This was originally posted in the GAW thread but I wanted to share it here where more people could see it, here it is in it's entirety.
Alright, I've had the Lanny's Clip for about a week, Steven sent it out Monday after the show and I got the call from the PO and I had it in my hands by Tuesday 5pm, it's not left my side since. First off, Steven, thanks so much, this is a beautiful knife and I think I've found a new large slip joint to carry with my lock blade usually a Sebenza or the ZT 0808, (thanks Anthony) the sad part is I'm going to have to decide which of my bigger slip joint s to leave home. As of the moment it's either gonna be the large Black Comp Case Sodbuster or my Camillus #23 Cigar/EE Jack both competent large folders but they look like work knives.
In the week some of the things I've noticed :
Most importantly, the generosity of Steven is typical of the upstanding members of this community and a great example of one the best forums I've had the privilege of bein' a contributing and supporting member of our little  (more like largest in the world) community of knife lovers.
Now about the knife, comin' in at 2.7 0zs , OAL of 8 1/8", approx 4 5/8" worth of handle closed with a 3 5/8" blade to the bolster and 3 3/16" of actual cuttin' edge.
First and for most the F&F is flawless, all the sharp angles have been broken and all the seems are imperceptible besides the transition from natural canvas micarta on the scales to the maroon linen micarta in the bolsters and blue G10 frame. Even the thin red liners are perfectly fit with absolutely no gaps anywhere. Can't see any light comin' through anywhere. It feels great in the hand, no hot spots and the little swell in the back of the handle just locks the knife in your hand while bein' just the perfect size to swivel in my hand to easily and securely change grip style.
The back spring sits flush in all positions, closed, half stop and open. That's hard enough to do with open and closed let alone all three. The fit of the tang to the backspring is seamless, you can't even catch a nail on any of the seams/mating surfaces.
Sunken joint, another sign of quality, the only sharp edge is the one that you cut with. No catchin' the 90* corner of the tang which is exposed on the majority of slip joints these days. Blade closed has the point sittin' well below the scales/covers so there's absolutely no chance of gettin' caught or nicked by a proud point.
The tang is another example of the level of JD's understanding and expertise of the mechanics of the tangs multiple functions. For a big blade the pull is what you'd expect about a 7 but because of the peak of the clip point there's plenty of real estate to grasp and make it a breeze to open. There's even a compound radius where the back spring rides on the tang bein' more radiused(sp?) makin' the initial open to the half stop more like a 5 and once the blade is half open and you can get a better grip, not that the initial openin' whether pinchin' or usin' the crescent nail nick is difficult it's just a nice touch and the sign of a master cutler.
Once you pass the more acute radius of the tang the blade snaps open the rest of the way with authority and the fit is so perfect it looks like a FB and has absolutely no up and down or lateral play in the blade at all, I'm still blown away by the F&F. Centered blade
The blade, Sandvik 12C27 with it's nice high hollow grind and drawn swedges are literally perfect, grinds matching perfectly on both sides and the satin finish is the cherry on top. Easy to sharpen and takin' a razor edge make this an amazing slicer and certainly will become my new restaurant knife. Not only is this a joy to use but a beauty to behold.
I've spent all week researcnin' JD Ellis and I couldn't find much on him as a maker, his history, who he studied under or even if he's still makin' such beautiful and functional blades but I did see many examples of what he's done and his work speaks for itself. Steven, this has become one of my 10 favorite knives and by far my favorite custom slip joint next to my Ray Cover Sr Drop Point little skinner and will stay in the family as an heirloom EDC. If there's ever anything I can do for you please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to do whatever you need. In my book you're ok and I'd be honored to consider you a friend sir. Your GAW knife as of the moment is my favorite birthday present and I doubt I'll get anything better before Flag Day, (my real birthday).
Here's a few more pics you can expect to be seein' it a lot in my pics for the knives I post on our forum, again thank you.
...and here's a prototype quickie sheath I made for it to try an idea out I had, now I hafta find a decent piece of leather to make a nicer one.
