Final #%^@$% Lee.

Seriously, the amount of daily activities where I found myself going for one was incredible. I knew the value of my knives however, it was so obvious that my g/f observed several situations where I visually was flustered because I didn't know what my next step was because I normally handled that with a blade. Really cool experience regarding the "Do you really need that everywhere you go" type of questions.

the answer is always yes, just curious, why did you go kinfeless in NYC?/ That is the LAST #*&)^$(@& place id go with out a knife. and im there more than the average traveler

Try spending 13 weeks without one--just got back from Parris Island this past Friday.

It's definitely annoying not to have a knife on you.

I once chaperoned a high school trip to the east coast that included going to NYC. Sense it was a school trip I couldn't use my knife. I kept a small folder in my backpack just in case of an emergencies though. I think this was almost worse having it in my bag because any time a situation came up that I would normally use my knife for I couldn't and it felt like I was being taunted to use it. It was terrible but your right it definitely answer the " do you really need to carry that with you all the time?" question.

Pick up a titanium card with the anodized edge and keep it in your wallet when you have to knife less. You will feel better.

Why no knife?

I know NYC is strict, but not THAT strict... Right?

EDIT: I thought the airlines finally allowed small knives, but sadly I was wrong...:(

Yea I'm also a little confused on why you didn't carry at all in NYC.

I'm from Long Island and am in the city for both business and personal all the time, and always carry at least a Primary EDC.

Yes you might not wanna risk carrying a large folder and getting caught some how, but a smaller folder is no problem at all.

Laws might be on the stricter side in the city, but knives in general aren't illegal to carry.

I had to spend some time in NYC a few years ago. My problem (maybe the OP's as well?) was not NYC, but getting the knife there. I killed 2 birds with one stone. Bought a small folder there (a Buck 503, IIRC) and then sent it home via UPS. So I had one to carry and a new knife, too.

Could have used one of these:

Wow Jeff I've never seen that type of lanyard before, pretty damn sick if you ask me.

Going to look to pick one of those up for work related EDC.

Thank you for posting the pics brother!

reignman - you should have been able to carry a slipjoint. It's non-threatening enough that it shouldn't have been a problem.

Thanks for your service.

I lived in the UK for 6 months and always carried something. I wouldn't be so worried if I were you, just put a SAK on a keychain

I am from NY, didn't want to fly/check one and have an issue.
I'm fairly confident in my abilities physically in regards to confrontation so I don't carry a knife primarily as a weapon.

Interesting thread... hehehe.

Btw, in N.Y.C. it's "illegal" to have a knife "clipped" (showing) to your pocket or pack.... you must have it "down inside" your pocket or pack.
Yes.... must be concealed not 'clipped".
How's that for craziness!
(No BK2's or Military fighters please!)

That "City Dweller" faux 'pen cap lanyard' is a nice concept, it may get you by in some "other city" but I'd personally never use that here in N.Y.C.
If a Cop pulls that "clipped" pen cap from your pocket.... and it's attached to a knife.... hasta la vista.

Like all of you, I have a very nice varied collection of things, but only EDC three (3).
All have way under 3' inch blades.
A Spyderco Ladybug.
A Cold Steel Super edge serr.
A Doug Ritter RSK Mk5.
The above three are used for utility purposes every day and very effectively.
They can also be used defensively quite effectively... believe me.
And always one of two so called "Tac." pens.

Living in N.Y.C. is a real challenge, one must be creative and know what you can get away with and what you can't.

Last I checked you can carry up to a 4" blade, folding or fixed, but it must be carried completely concealed. Also the cops have the obnoxious and serious tendency to judge any knife they can flick open as a gravity knife, so if going the folding route you want something that can lock closed or carry a slipjoint with a nail nick and not enough blade to grab and "Spyder-drop."

Plese chck out the laws in NYC before you go getting all hysterical. It is perfectly legal to carry a pocket knife in NYC. Living in the suburbs of Washington D.C., my better half and I take the train up pretty often for a day or over night trip to NYC just for the museums and sight seeing. I usually carry a small SAK, and have never had a problem. There are a few places that ban knives, like the major tourist traps. The Empire State building, Stature Of Liberty, and one or two museums. Last time I was there, we went to go up in the Empire State building, and my little SAK didn't make it through security. They had a system in pace where it gets put in a bag, a ticket is given, and you pick up the knife when you leave. This was a few months ago.

As for the NYPD, they are looking for clips in pockets. If you have a pocket knife shoved down in the pocket, no problem. The SAK was even sitting in plain sight last summer when we stopped by a little delay for sandwich makings, and had a little lunch in Central Park. A policeman on a gorgeous horse went by, and my wife complimented him on his horse, and he chatted with us for a while. He never said boo about the SAK on the picnic table. NYC is a fun place to visit, and you may even learn something at any of the many fine museums and art galleries they have. Don't believe the most often wrong babbling hype you read on knife forums. You can carry a knife in NYC.

Carl.
