You go about your business, minding the gardens, mowing the lawn, trimming the bushes,...... Then one day you see something and take a second look. You get a big smile.......THEY'RE BACK !!!

It starts out like a little asparagus spear. Then in less than two nights ( they grow at night) it jumps up to a two foot tall fireworks display. In a couple of days, its gone. It is time for my surprise lilies to begin blooming. Several years ago I stumbled upon a cash of hundreds of bulbs that had been sitting idle beneath some ground juniper on the side of a house I was helping to fix up. I replanted some and took home maybe 200 bulbs. You see nothing all year and then at the end of the summer - wham - they are blooming.

Enjoy.

What a lovely, delicate flower! Thanks for sharing, Stacy.

Wow, those are beautiful!!!!
I need to get some and not mention it to my Mom!
Sure would be fun when they popped up!
What are they called if I went to the plant place to get some of the bulbs Stacy?
Thanks for sharing the wonderful photos!!!

They are called Surprise Lilies, and also called Naked Lady Lilies. Lycoris squamigera, is the most common one. They come in pink, red, and white. They are in the Amaryllis family. They may take several years to bloom the first time. Planted in the fall, with a shot of bulb booster, they often bloom in the next year, or year two at latest. They are definitely not the plant for instant gratification gardeners. Check the online bulb supply companies. After this years blooming,I'll see if I can rustle up some more bulbs for you.
