Whittled my first hair in 3 spots :)
Got it done with my Endura 4 on the sharpmaker fine stones.
Also stropped on a Stropblock I received today (thanks to sharpening videos by CrimsonTideShooter)
Maybe I should look into some ultra fine stones.
Well.. on to making my Yojimbo 2 sharper!

I prefer sticks for whittling, but, hey, if it makes you happy, and you got enough hair to spare, why not.

Awesome! Can you provide a little more detail about your stropping block? As in what is it made of, where did you get it, what have you loaded it with if anything?

I'm not sure if I can post directly for it but just google strop block and it should be the first result :)
It came loaded with green compound

I just recently accomplished this task as well! I was stoked! Congratulations! It is fun

Now get yourself to where you can do this off the stones without stropping and you'll be good to go.

That was done with a 600 grit edge off my Edge Pro.

Now be a MAN and freehand it! :D :D :D :D

Just kidding. I only have a sharpmaker and a strop I made with a piece of leather and Green compound and I am still far away from whitling anything... Shaving yes. Whitling? No.

Good job to ya'll...

No you're absolutely right...I really wish I had the skill to freehand an edge as sharp as I get off my Edge Pro, and I have the utmost respect for those who are able to. My hat's off to them.

Evil D, getting a few curls on one section is where I'm at now. It's done with freehanding on DMT's and a Stropman green compound.

Mine curl up like the other picture. Why do some curl and others (ark?) the hair? I wonder if it's blade thickness/geometry.

My biggest gripe with this method is hair variation. My hairs are so easy to split a 3 or 4 times in one section, my fiance has hair that it's difficult to whittle just once. Sometimes, with hair, it's not the skill but the person's hair type.

I'm sure there's vast differences in hair thickness even from one person. Not to brag, but my pics were of my 4 year old daughter's hair, which is extremely fine/delicate. I myself, am bald, so I can't split my own LOL.

Great job. The only thing more satisfying than a hair whittling knife is one you just sharpened yourself.

Not sure If I understand this correctly, but I did sharpen the knife I whittled hair with. In fact I don't think I've ever owned a factory edge that was sharp enough to whittle hair. Spyderco has a reputation for producing some of the sharpest factory edges out there, but they're nowhere near as sharp as what you can achieve off an Edge Pro.

yay fellow hair whittlers! i freehand sharpen, normally to 8000 grit but sometimes 16k. i carry a strop around. my first was a recon 1 about 4 years ago with my dmt xx fine stone. it still is my standard for 'sharp enough'
