Hey guys. I was trying to start a fire tonight with flint and steel. I have been successful before but tonight no joy. Any tips. I had a pretty good nest going it smoked really good but no flames. thanks

Hello

Bige610

If it's getting really hot and no flames,, theres pretty much no reason why it wouldn't burst into flames..

The only thing I can think of is that you aren't squuezing the bundle tight enough to the burning char, so there is very little contact between the char and the jute....

Another possibility,, but not likely is that your jute was damp...

That's about the Only things I can think of..

Keep at it,, it will work..

Basically what Eric said. Sometimes if you have too small of a birds nest then the tendency is to hold it more loosely, so the coal doesn't burn your finger. What happens is the coal burns a little depression around itself without fuel so your blowing just exhausts the charcloth. The thing to do in that case is to unravel more twin and build a bigger nest. That way you can squeeze harder and ensure contact with the Jute and Coal.

Also vary your blowing. Start blowing softly at first until the smoke starts thick, then increase the force and sustain of your breath.
