JW Smith tactical folders

I have just been talking with Les Robertson at Robertson Custom Cutlery about a knife he has, a JW Smith Revolution II tactical folder. Les said that Mr. Smith had not made any tacticals over the past year and that he might not be making many more in the future. I was trying to decide which knife I wanted to purchase and it was between these three; large Classic Sebenza w/snakewood inlays, Brad Duncan large Whiplash, and the JW Smith Revolution II. After sleeping on it last night I decided the following;

1- I could probably pick up a sebenza any time I want one as they are readily available.
2- The Duncans seem to be in plentiful supply also. I've seen several for sale on more than one site.
3- I might not find a JW Smith tactical style folder any time soon. I have seen a few of the RC folders but all were the small size.

With this line of thinking I decided on the JW Smith Revolution II. Les also told me that this knife was built to to the job it was designed for and was made from 3/16" S30V blade stock, with extra thick titanium liners.

Everything I've been able to find concerning JW Smith folders has been absolutely positive, have not read one negative thing on his knives. Have I missed something somewhere? I will say that I definately looking forward to tomorrow!:D :thumbup: :D

He puts the same attention to detail in his tactical knives that he does his high art folders.

There is no downside to his work that I have been able to find.

Thanks for the response. Back this past July I was going to purchase a Smith framelock but had to pass in the end. I really regret not getting that knife but this one should make up for it!

JWS tacticals are the cat's meow in my opinion. I have bought 4 of them here and on eBay in the last couple of years. I advise you to do some research on the 2nd hand market.

You definately can't go wrong with one of John's knives. His folders are among the best of the best. It's a shame he doesn't have more of a "following". I have a few of his knives and the fit and fiinsh of his $450 folders matches, and in some cases surpasses the quality of some of my $600+ folders. I have yet to encounter any type of QC issue on one of his knives. It would be a real shame if he stops making tacticals in the future.

Cutter17,
I just grabbed an RG-1 off the exchange the other day, compliments of Mike Robuck. It is actually waiting for me at the PO as I write this, and I should have it tomorrow. I had not heard that Smith might not be making folders any more, but simply wanted to get something from someone I consider to be one of the best.

I own two. Top 'o the line skills.

I've had my share of some tactical folders, including a JL Williams, and I'll say, that the JW Smith, was one of the top ones I've had.Very smooth, tight, and good lock up,f&f was top.Very well made knives.

I have two JW Smith, one frame lock and one large linerlock – I think it is named RG. Both are excellent but the linerlock is the best made folder I have when it comes to fit and finish. Now I have the smaller RG on special order from mr Smith. He will put on scales of jigged bone and do some anodizing and file work.

Been busy all week and this is the first time I've had to post. I received the Smith this past Friday and my first impressions were, "Holy Cow!" The overall feel, the perfect attention to detail, the flawless fit and finish, and then that buttery smooth opening sold me! Several adjectives in that previous sentence, but everyone is deserving. This knife is just perfect. I can't get over how much attention to detail was taken and how excellent the fit and finish is. This will probably be my dress up/Sunday go to meeting knife, and it will be the envy of all.:thumbup: :D :thumbup:

Congrats on the new knife!! Are you taking any pix? And does the maker have a website?

I don't think you can buy a better knife than a JWS, he's about as good as they get.
