After the giveaway threads, I decided to run the local vendor that I know carries a good selection of Kershaw knifes (Bi-Mat).

They had the JYD I in stock and I was impressed with the looks. But, when I went to open it, there was no thumbstud. I thought, "I should have noticed that before. It must be an assisted opening." I pushed the hump and, no it must be a flipper.

Well, I could not get it to open with one hand. Do you have to loosen the pivot, or do somethin more? Was this not a good sample?

I have the JYD II which is larger but very similar design. Yes it is a flipper, it took me a few tries to get it going reliably and I often will do a wrist flick just to be sure. If the action feels tight (i.e. the blade is not swinging fairly easily) then it may be too tight. The blade should stay closed but move pretty smoothly+easily once partially open if my JYD II is any guide. Good luck.

When I read up on it, the description was, "One handed, index finger opening system first builds pressure and then propels the blade out of the handle for easy deployment by either hand"

I did not feel initial resistance and then a release. Perhaps that was a bad sample.

Nope, that's how it operates. The JYD I won't flip open as quickly or as positively as the larger JYD II does, due to the smaller, lighter blade of the JYD I, so with that one, you do have to also "flick" your wrist alittle while pushing on the little "lever" flipper thingy.

The small JYD will fire without a wrist flick, but, you have to have to have your flipping technique perfected. No whiskey finger! You can't just lifelessly push the flipper and expect it to act like SpeedSafe. It's not quite that easy with any flipper.

The larger flippers are most definitely easier to open. The small JYD just takes practice, but can launch quick and fast.

That's arguably a feature. Lacking the safety of the SpeedSafe knives, the heavy flipper pull (is that a real term?) keeps it from opening in your pocket. It's like a double-action trigger on your knife.

Ed, check this thread out for a good "flipping technique". It works great for
me. Fires fast and locks up nice and tight.

I may have to break down and give it a shot. I have a Storm II that I was going to sell. Maybe I will try for a trade towards a JYDI

If you liked the knife and the way it felt in your hand, grab one up.
You'll be "flipping" like a pro in no time. ;)
