I was a lookin' at some of thems straight pull riffles and have this question about the K-31. How are the iron sights on them? I've looked through the sights on Mausers and can't use them very well (must be the glass eye).

Or which other surplus rifles have good sights? I think the Enfield Mk 4s have some of those fancy peep thingies.

Many thanks for help.

They can be a bit difficult to pick up in low light. At least for me and my aging eyes. Dont let that discourage you though. I can manage 1'' for three shots (off a bench) at 100yds on a good day with GP11. And I can still hit a 10'' circle at 200 with the irons from prone prety darn reliably.

If you want to see how well the K31 can perform, get one of the St.Marie K31scope mounts and some decent glass, and strech it out to 300-400yds with the GP11 swiss surplus ammo. I think you would be pleasantly supprised.

I have a K31 & think it's a great rifle. Sights are some better than military mausers. I'm far sighted so I have difficulty with any irons other than peeps. The front sight adjusts for windage by sliding fore & aft in a diagonal groove. They have a tight chamber so if you reload you have to be very particular with die adjustment, case length & overall length. With all that said, I've done some really good shooting with mine.
An apocrytical story goes that once a German officer met a Swiss officer at some social function. German stated "Our army is five times the size of yours. What would you do think would happen if we decided to invade?" The Swiss replied, "We'd all fire 5 shots & then go home." Don't know if that story really happened but every able bodied man & a lot of the women do military service & when they go home, their gun & a supply of ammo goes with them. Not unusual today to see teens on bicycles with rifles slung across their backs pedaling to the local shooting match.

I think that the sights are as you said, Bruce, better than Mauser, but not as nice as a peep sight like some of the Enfields or Garand had on them. For open sights, I like the ones on my K31 pretty good.

You should have bought one a year ago when they were way more cheaper :-)

k31s have some of the better open sights in the world of milsurps. I too like aperture sights better, but when it comes to open sights, square notches are the only thing I can see.

Oh, and scoping makes shooting a k31 almost too easy.

Swiss sights much better for me than the Mauser sights. You can get a Mojo replacement sight that works as a forward mounted peep, but I didn't get much better results.

I never liked open sights until trying those on the Swiss rifles.

You can get match grade arpeture sights for the K31, but they will cost more than the rifle.

:)

My condolences!

Tom
