I bought a gallon of K&G quench oil from a knifemaker's estate. I can't make out the rest of the label and it is not listed on their website. Has anyone used this or can anyone tell me what type of oil it is?
Thanks.
Chuck

Try www.BloodOfARedheadedVirgin.com :p:D

(ummm, actually; don't click that link. It probably exists and isn't something anybody would want to see)

I'm only messin with ya, Chuck. I'm sure one of the experts here will answer your question in a non smartassed manner. :)

The oil is listed in their newest catalogue that I have but all it says is:

"Fast quench heat treating oil" available in 1 or 5 gallon lots. Doesn't say what type of oil it is or list anything else about it. Might have to call them and ask.

Chuck, I bought a 5 gallon pail of this a few years back. I've used it on O-1 mostly, and it works well with pretty consistent results. Not a "fast" quench...more of a "medium" speed. I saw a thread a long time ago on this forum that referred to it as one of the products in the Shell Voluta line of quenchants. It may take some time, but I'll try to dig it up for you. -Matt-

Ok, so maybe it only took 5 minutes...but post #18 is the one with the reference. Not sure if David called them or how he found out the info, however, I'm not using the "fast" quenching oil, but the other type they were selling.

I tried it out today and it seemed pretty fast to me, faster than the vegetable oil I have been using. I differentially heat treated a blade with it and so far the results look good. I will post more when I get the blade finished.
Thanks,
Chuck

I did indeed call them years back and they told me it was that shell product. I've been using it ever since on everything from 1095 to D2....

Wow Chuck, You got David to rear his face! Good to see ya back Dave. Sorry to hijack Chuck.
