How's it going out there guys?

I've been practicing grinding blades out of pieces of yardsticks. Some are good, some arn't so good. But it's all good practice. The garage floor is littered with them.
Right now I'm a little depressed. I'm sitting here at the computer looking at a few blades ground by Mr. Engnath and a massive bowie ground by Mr. Havorsky. Mine look like crap. Their grind lines are sharp and even and dead straight. Mine...arrgh! Don't get me wrong, I am having fun. :p I've ground four knives so far. Two are halfway decent. Maybe I'm too hard on myself and want perfection too soon. I'm gonna have to get these heat treated soon so I have enough time to finish them up. At the beggining I thought that the middle of March was way down the line...now it's right around the corner.
Oh well, I'm having fun and giving it my best shot.
So...How are you doing? Remember no details...

actually I have enough I've started to use them for fireplace kindling. ;)

NOPE....Keep right on beatin yourself up....cause this time I will be your harshest critic!

;)

Just keep havin a good time with it. I'm looking forward to what you come up with :D

As far as mine. Still haven't started it. I'm trying to get things organized so I can get my new grinder running. I've made a little headway on some orders and got a few pairs of spurs I had to work on out of the way. Hoping to have the grinder running by this weekend.

I am sure that it will be fine Tom. I look forward to see what you come up with myself. I do know how you feel but we can only do our best right? You should consider convex grinding. Sharp grind lines...???....what sharp grind lines! :p :D Hey are you making it to Blade this year?

Mine is being heat and cryo treated right now. Should have it back the end of next week. It won't take long to complete. I think I'll even make the deadline. :D

Matt, I don't know...my wife says I'm my harshest critic. You'd probably come in a distant second. ;)

Mark, I'm seriously considering removing the platen and doing a convex grind.
I have a couple of designs that would fit that type of blade geometry.

Yep, we'll be there. :D Jess said she had fun most of the time she was there. She has bad knees so all the walking kind of did her in. :grumpy:
I've gotta start saving now...the flight/hotel costs are a killer.

Four knives? Bob (Engnath) would grind that many in 10 minutes.

That is not said to cut you down, just to put things in perspective. Skill comes with practice, lots and lots of practice. That takes time. I learned knife making directly from Bob in his shop on and off for 6 years. I have now been at it for 15 years. If you took me now and Bob the day before he died, he could still out grind me three to one. He was just that good.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Be critical and try to do your best but be realistic. If you set the bar too high, you will burn yourself out.

This is supposed to be fun after all right?

I was lucky enough to stumble on the forums while Bob was still with us. A great guy and a master at the grinder. I still check out his site for tips. I'm very glad it was able to be saved.

I know I'll never be able to grind like that, but I am having fun without a doubt. :)

I have to get mine going.....mine will be an everday carrier for the (hope the think so) lucky recipient.
Any guess what it is?
Its a repeat design for me.....

Tom, stop talking yourself out of future accomplishments. You think Bob Engnath got to the point of being one of the best blade grinders by telling himself that? Don't make me come over there and slap you around! :D :)

Keep on practicing, because eventually you have to show ME your work! Bwahahahaha! :)

LOL thanks for the laugh. I guess I better get practicing. Blade isn't that far off. Yep, Jess and I will be at Blade. :D
