Hi Guys,
Has anyone used K245 for knife making? I have been offered a quantity of 3.5 x 60 mm
Any tips on heat treatment would be welcome

It looks like the love child of 5160 & 9260 ;-)'
Should be pretty tough stuff, I'd take all they offer!

Thanks for the advice. The quantity is 300 kilograms I can see a lot of machetes being made....very useful in the Australian bush...every 4 wheel drive should carry one

ive got some k245 here to and i have a chart that says its close to 02 ill post a link later tonight can anyone say if that right

Actually it appears to be 9259 at the outer limits for some alloying elements, and kept cleaner and tighter spec for tool usage.
Damien, O2 has much higher carbon, lower silicon, and it has small amounts of nickel and vanadium by my charts. I'd imagine that would make it behave considerably different - although I don't have any first hand experience with it. I don't believe it is readily available on this side of the pond.

Hi KevSharp,

I might be interested in some of that mate. Where abouts are you in Perth?

Matt

K245....hmm....appears to be pretty much exactly the same as S30V but with much less carbon, much less chromium, more manganese, more silicone, less vanadium, and less molybdenum. ;) :D

As I said, heat treat it like 5160/9260 and you will be just fine.

Austenitize at 1550F/850C and hold for 5-10 minutes. Quench in oil. Temper at 450F/230C .
