K720 Blade roll when carving, is this normal?

Hey,

So I am pretty new to knives, well, expensive knives. I recently got a Casstrom No 10 Swedish Forest Knife in K720 High Carbon Steel, and used it today for the first time.

I was carving through some pretty soft wood, and hit a knot, now the blade has rolled.

Is this normal? I have spent about 30 minutes trying to get the roll/chip out with a 1000 grit stone, but there is still one left which will take forever to remove.

Should I contact who I bought it from and see if they can do anything, or was this my own fault?

Thanks

Did you skip a few steps retelling the story or did you really go straight to a 1k grit stone for a roll?

There isn't much talk of steels here, even in the maintenance sub-forum, but a rolled edge is EXACTLY what a steel is intended to correct! Unless there were chips present within the roll there's no need (nor any advantage) to jumping first to ANY grit stone before atleast trying a steel (followed next by a strop).

Thanks for the reply.

There where some small chips on the roll, but I didn't know stropping could remove a roll, pretty new to sharpening.

I have the blade shaving sharp again, but there is still a tiny chip.

I don't understand what you mean about a steel correcting?

What should I do in the case of chips and rolls?

Thanks

D2 rolling? Usually mine chips. Be glad it rolled.

What stone do you have? I'd recommend diamond or SiC for D2. And try a lower grit. Should make it go much faster.

What edge angle is it sharpened at? Knots are assholes.

For actual chips the only option is sharpening...

If there's a chip within the roll, realign the edge with a steel before resharpening. If the chip is shallower than the roll you'll have to remove less blade edge to get rid of it. This happened to me on my VG10 Endura--I went right to the stones and had to spend a long time and a lot of blade to get back to an apex. Later it occurred to me that I should have headed over to the kitchen knife block first.

Knots suck! That's what got my Endura rolled/chipped, and one put two big chips in my S35VN Sebenza.
