first off, i did a pretty lazy search of the forums and came up with nothing. so, i'm sorry if i missed a thread full of information that i need.

moving on, i want to do a lot more canoeing. my go to adventure partner is a dog. he's around 65 or 70 lbs, husky/shepherd mix. he's a good boy, but a little on the dim side. the first time we went canoeing, he jumped out in the middle of the lake. thankfully, it was a small lake. we were able to paddle back to the shallows and get him back in without much hardship. he's a decent swimmer, but i want to keep him safe.

can anyone with more experience recommend a decent brand? for light use (4 or 5 times per year), but i don't want to have to replace it in a couple of years. budget's $75 CDN or less preferably.

thanks much. in lieu of recommendations, I'd gladly accept funny dog vs water stories (and pics if possible). No sad stories please.

I don't have any gear recommendations since I don't paddle with dogs, but have you done any practice on getting him back into the boat from the water? Having a jacket would make that easier as it gives you more to grab.

I started with "dog life jacket" as a search premise, I found one on Amazon that has good ratings. It's not cheap though. You might also consider a pet freindly store like petco or ask in bass pro or a cabelas of there is one in your area.

we haven't done a whole lot of practice yet. but on dry land the handle on his back pack has come in handy more than once.

I also searched that big river site. was just wondering if anyone had experience with any brands listed. there's one of each hunting / fishing stores about equidistant from my house, but not exactly close by. pretty close to opposite ends of hwy 400 if i'm not mistaken. next road trip i'll have to ask around.

thanks for the input.

The problem I've found with doggo swimming is that they don't understand the PFD, sure it keeps them afloat but they expend just as much (or more) energy cause they don't understand its doing the work for them and they just continously doggy paddle till the point of exhaustion...

First rule of any dog thread; post pic of the pooch!

(Couldnt see any pics in the OP but am on my phone - sometimes pics dont show).
