Greetings all.

New to the forum and fixed blade knives. I just purchased the KA-Bar 22 and have a couple of questions. I did not see these questions addressed when I did a search.

Sharpening:

I own both the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker and the Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener (Original). Any issues with using either of these? If so, what might I consider?

I see from the knife spec that the angle is 20 degrees and the grind is flat. The Worksharp does have a 20 degree guide but seems only for thin blades. Seems also to push the convex grind.

Storage:

Is it really required to store knife in the paper sleeve that came with it, or can I simply leave it in the nylon sheath that came with the knife?

Hope to learn much on these forums.

Open to suggestions for sure.

Howdy,

First off; great choice of knife. For sharpening, both systems will suit you just fine. The sharpmaker will hold the V grind and touch up the edge nicely. The Work sharp will convex the edge because it is a belt driven sharpener. There is nothing wrong with a convexed edge, many people prefer them. As for storage, you can leave it in the nylon sheath. Just make sure the knife is dry. If you want to go that step further, coat the edge in a mineral oil. You'll notice if you leave the knife for a really long time it may not seem as sharp as you put it away, just give the edge a few swipes on the sharpmaker fine stones and it will perk up instantly.

Stick around and read lots. There are many articles over in the maintenance section about storage and sharpening.

Cheers
