It literally stinks.
I don't go around sniffing my knives , but it hits the air when I take the knife out of my pocket and irritates my nose a bit.
It's kind of an incense type of smell but also a chemical if that makes sense.

is this normal ?

Do you think some Dawn would cure this ?

Btw another thanks to RLDubbya for the knife and generous giveaway, I'm certainly not complaining about the knife.

Where did RLDubbya stick that thing :)

Somebody needs to smell their Kabar Dozier.

When I first opened the box the smell filled the room.
Really the knife is great, but that smell is just strange.
It's probably a chemical smell, but really reminds me of the incense my hippy grandmother lights.

I'm gonna go ahead and give it a Dawn bath, but I'd really like to know if this is normal.

It's not normal.
I gifted several of them a few years ago.
No smell.
Great knife.

I have purchased and gifted several of the hunter model which I think has been discontinued. No odor that I recall.

I washed it out really good, but I can still smell it.
I decided to sniff the thing and it's coming from around the pivot.

Maybe its from whatever thread locker they use, or the oil ?

I see on KA-BAR'S website that the grey handle is new for 2018, could it be that the grey FRAN they're using just smells for some reason ?

It's EEZOX. I put a couple drops (literally) on the pivot, and then wiped off the blade edge with it; it is a great CLP but has an odor. I don't even notice the smell anymore. Can you leave the knife outside for a night, opened up?

Thanks for clearing that up.

I think I could let it air out outside or something, but it'll be a bit since it's raining here.

I don't know what else it could be, honestly. I have trouble believing it's that bad, just because I have a customer who has the gray handled Dozier, and I recently sharpened & lubed that knife, no complaints. The only thing I wonder is if it is related to your knife then being sealed up for shipping. Maybe being sealed caused some molecules from the EEZOX to penetrate the plastic handle?

In any case, if you can't get this resolved to your satisfaction, drop me an email. I will get a replacement out to you, and ask that you simply destroy the one that is not working out. I don't want you to pay to ship it back to me.

I think the knife is airing out already, so it's fine e now.

Btw when I first got the knife out of the package there was quite a bit of oil on the blade and I had to wipe it every time I opened the knife.
I'm thinking you may have put larger drops than you realized, and being sealed in a box is what caused the smell to be strong for me.
No biggie though, it probably wasn't actually that bad but my nose is sensitive to smells.
I don't wanna sound like I was complaining because wasn't and love the knife, I just wanted to know what the mysterious odor was.

Now there's really no need to replace the knife, but that's definitely a kind offer which I sincerely appreciate.

OK - important thing is that you have a knife you are pleased to have. It's certainly possible that I used more oil than I thought; it's also possible that the nature of EEZOX is that it needs "air" to properly dry. With EEZOX, you are supposed to put on at least two coats; the first coat, you clean the knife / gun only with EEZOX. You then wipe it down, and apply a film of EEZOX over the entire surface, and let it sit overnight. If there are some spots that have not dried in 8-12 hours, you wipe them off with a dry rag. Sounds like putting it directly in the packing was a mistake.

It is an odd smell, I'll give you that.

Makes sense to me.

Mine doesn't smell, but it tastes funny. Funny peculiar not funny ha ha. It kind of taste like the color pink.

Well since I took it apart and wiped it out really good mine doesn't smell at all anymore either.
Now it just has a drop of mineral oil on both sides, which is my preference anyways since my knives often cut food.

Glad you found a solution.
