I need to know which is the more stout knife overall. I like the style of the Next Gen better, it will be a camp/survival knife. I wish the NextG came in the blacked out blade. The pommel with lanyard hole is something i like also. Should i be sold on the NextG, or go with the trusted and time proven USMC.

I would pick the 1095 CroV over 440A without even thinking about it.

+1. 1095 may not be new or flashy, but it's proven itself time and again as a very good steel, especially for larger fixed blades (fighters, camp/survival knives, etc.).

Don't count out good 440a! But yeah take the 1095 if you're not going to anywhere near salt water.

They're both good knives. I like 1095 better than 440A, but Kabar's heat treat of 440A results in a tough corrosion resistant steel that takes/holds a decent edge.

The Next Gen feels stouter in my hand than the traditional Marine style does for some reason. I think the overall design of the Next Gen results in a better using knife myself.

I'm still waiting for a Next Gen handle with a 1095 blade. It would be the best of both worlds.

If you're not dead set on the military style blade, the Becker BK7 or the Kabar Potbelly offer 7" blades of 1095 better suited to camping/outdoor use. I have the Potbelly and it's a beast of a blade. I've never had ANY 7" blade that chops like it does, yet it will carve fuzz sticks almost as good as my Mora's.

My son has both and the next gen is (IMO) *way* more comfortable to use but 1095 is so much easier to sharpen and holds enough of a better edge, I'd buy the classic any day of the week.

I have a 1095 kabar and it's very tough but if your open to suggestions I have seen a destruction test of the D2 kabar and it's tougher because it has a larger, thicker tang.

That would be a great knife! Especially if it had a stacked leather handle option. :D

1095 is a great tough steel that holds a good edge especially with KaBar's heat treat, I've used mine a good bit since I recently got it and other than some touch ups where I rolled the edge doing something somewhat stupid, I haven't had to sharpen it. Stacked leather spacers are a great handle material.

one more choice if anyone reads this... kraton handles vs leather stacked, is one inferior to the other, im guessing the kraton would do better around water.

Yeah, as iconic as the leather-handled Ka-Bar USMC is, for functionality I'd choose Kraton without hesitation. It's more durable and doesn't absorb water, oils, etc. like the leather tends to.

IIRC, the designs are the same except for the blade and handle materials. Same blade and tang design, so neither is inherently stronger. Coating a stainless blade accomplishes nothing. And as it gets used the coating will get scraped up, so there goes your aesthetics.

1095 Cro Van is tougher and holds an edge better. But the unprotected edge will corrode if you store it improperly.
440A is pretty bullet proof as far as corrosion resistance, and it still holds a decent edge.

If I wanted something to keep in my car trunk for emergencies, I'd buy the Next Gen.
If I were going to use it all the time, I'd buy the 1095 Cro Van.

True But the d2 extrema kabar has a thicker, stouter tang but I think it's the only one. You can see it on this destruction video.

I have a D2 next gen, great knife, holds an edge forever I have found its tougher than the 1095 kabar steel, I like it so much I now have 2

Personally I don't see the appeal of a stick tang knife if you aren't going with stacked leather handles since its one of the only construction methods that allow for that handle style. If you're wanting synthetic handle material why not just get a full tang Becker?
