I just got my USMC kabar today and its just no sharp enough for me. It is my first big fixed and I could get all my other folders to shave with just the simple three stone lansky kit. Will it work on the kabar for getting it to shave hair on the arm. Sorry I tried to search but couldnt find any answers for a noob that can not sharpen freehand. Thanks

A few years back when I tried to use my lanksy on my ka-bar I had very poor luck. Ended up just using the stones free hand, like a file (this was before I had any bench stones). Actually came out pretty decent.

I have the feeling people are gonna jump on me for saying this, but:

Ka-Bars do surprisingly well on a cheap pull-through sharpener, and some stropping.

I think it has to do with the steel.

Of course, you could probably also get a great edge with any of the other methods out there--point is, use what you're comfortable with, they're darn easy to sharpen.

Blasphemy!!

Nah, I'm kidding. Those pull-through sharpeners are the anti-lock brakes of the sharpening world... And I don't like ABS.

I cant freehand and I dont want to learn on my new knife and mess it up. If the lansky wont do it could I get a sharpmaker and will that make it shave?

I sharpened the USMC ka-bar with the sharpmaker by lying the stones as you do for the chisels and more or less free handing it, same with the SRK and Recon Tanto by CS, it works alot better then the lansky.

I never had a problem getting my lansky stones to sharpen my ka-bar usmc. The problem i have is getting the clamp to hold the blade secure. The coating is too slick for the clamp to hold as tight as I would like.I just freehand it now.1095 is a forgiving steel to sharpen so if you screw it up a little bit it won't ruin your blade.just take your time and with practice you'll get it shaving sharp in no time.

DMT makes a plastic clamp that might work better than the Lansky at holding the Kabar. They also have a secondary clamp for use with thick blades.

The Lansky will work fine, I attache the guide toward the back of the blade and do the back 1/3 and repeat the process toward the tip.

I find it easier to do small portions of the blade at a time especially toward the tip, and it's easy to tell where you left of on the edge when you reattach the guide.

Hope it helps
