i'm looking for a big ol fixed blade. this seems to fit the bill. most i have read or seen on these knives are positive. there have been a couple of negative remarks about the handle screws coming loose.

anybody have one want to comment?

Yes they come loose. Go to the hardware store and buy some blue locktite.
I love the BK-7. It's even better with the optional micarta scales.

I have a BK9, I love it, you should get the micarta scales for you BK7, they set the knife off nice,Tomars kabars has them.

I have the BK-7; I love it. The handle screws do come loose when chopping but if you give them a good, hard tighten with the hex wrench they won't come loose. You can also put some LokTite to keep them. The sheath isn't the best though.

first - thanks for the replies

second - i didn't know becker had a forum in the manufacturers section of the board until after i posted this.

third - i'm not a big collector - i have a buck 110 and a benchmade griptilian.

having said that, i research everything i buy. at first, i was going to go cheap, with a cheaper than dirt bowie. common sense won over and i figured i would try to get something of quality and only spend my money once.

i have come across some more negative remarks since this morning. cosmetic flaws, blade breaks etc.

as far as looks, price point, features, etc, this looks to be pretty much it for me (or the bk9) i guess i'm needing some type of reassurance before i drop the money.

Drop the cash — you won't be sorry. You've found very, very few reports of problems of any kind with Becker knives, and the few problems there have been, Ethan and Paul have made good on.

Becker is kind of the measuring stick for outdoor knives. Is it as tough as the Becker? How does it compare in price? How are the fit and finish? I compare all my outdoor knives to the Becker line because they really are such a superb knife for the money.

And that pretty much sums it up.

:)

i'm on page 9 of the becker forum - what you have posted seems to be the case.

hell, for 2 days now, all i have done is research youtube, here, the whole freakin web!

i was going back and forth between these and an ontario blade. just about the time i settled on these, i came across some of the not so glowing reports.

it's looking like i'll pull the trigger - i like the fact they seem to care what people think and stand behind the knives

I'd like to see the negative reports, can you put links to them?

generally speaking Ontario 1095 doesn't hold a candle to Kabar's. It's much softer, not as consistent and every Ontario I've owned I had to put 3 hours into the edge just to make it useable.

 gee, i've been all over the net..

the worse are in the becker forum here. shattered blades, cosmetically rough. there have been a bunch with the loose screws.

that said, as stated, it seems they are standing firm behind the blades.

a loose screw ain't that big of a deal...the other stuff gave me pause

I think that, for the most part, you'll find the negative reports are from the same person. There was a... person... who had a slight cosmetic flaw. Ethan replaced the knife three times, and this ... person... wasn't satisfied. Then this... person... went around the forums bashing both Becker and Ka-Bar.

There was also someone who broke a BK-9 (I think it was). Ethan replaced it, and that was the last I heard.

Most of the loose screws are not on the knife.

I have had to many Kabar and Ontario knives to began to remember, I never have encountered a single problem of any kind with either of them. Politics aside.

I have the old BK-7 and a new BK-9, Love them both.

What are you trying to say, Jim? We all know that I've had a screw loose for a long time. I've been drinking blue LocTite, but it doesn't seem to help.

made in China but great knife for the money.

Loose screws - Yep, tried chopping with mine and all 3 screws began to loosen. I'll be buying some blue locktite which should cure that.

The blade is 1095 CroVan - better than standard 1095 because both Chromium & Vanadium have been added. I have nothing negative to say about that steel - it is great. Mine came very sharp too.

The price - very reasonable at under $70 in plenty of places.

The holster - pretty standard, there are aftermarket kydex ones available if you want something better.

The scales - pretty standard, can replace with micarta for better grip or go with the cheap mod listed somewhere in the Becker sub forum. (using the pointy tip of a hot soldering put hundreds of little indents into it giving it a much grippier texture.

Overall I like it enough to have ordered a BK9 as well. I don't really need either knife but they are great for the money - on pure need I would only have a chopper and a 4" utility knife for camping. Sometimes you just want a knife because you like it.
