I'm very new to this forum and being interested in knives. I do have a couple of fixed blade knives, but have always kind of liked the look of the stacked leather handle knives such as the ka bar hunter. I'm actually considering the purchase of either the ka bar marine hunter or the bowie with the leather handle. I would appreciate any input. I know the blade material is DIN 1.4116stainless which I cannot find much about. I did read that it is similar to 440b stainless, but I'm not really sure if this is accurate. Thanks in advance for input.

Welcome to the forum oglesby.:)

There are some good steel specifications sites on the Internet. I think I have still got a list around here somewhere which I will try to find for you. In the meantime do a Google search for DIN 1.411.6 stainless and see if you locate the specs.

Also, You may want to try eBay to get some decent priced knives that are slightly used. You have to check and compare auctions but it will likely save you some money.

Last but not least what is your budget for this leather wrapped fixed blade? Perhaps others here could make suggestions other than Kabar..

Welcome, oglesby!

I can't comment much on the Marine Hunter, other than to say if you like the knife, go for it. It's a Ka-Bar. It's not going to be a bad knife or a bad steel. For the price you're probably not going to find something else that is otherwise what you want, but with significantly better steel. For instance, I could recommend a lesser priced knife in D2, but it doesn't have stacked leather handles.

I own one of the standard #1217 Marine Bowies, with a carbon blade, and feel it's one of the best knife values out there in its class/price range. You get a lot of knife for the money. There are some that compete with it, but not with leather handles.

Good luck with your search!

I couldn't agree more. KA-BARs are much-maligned by a lot of knife snobs, but I have yet to find one that isn't a terrific value.

I have a lot of VERY expensive knives that I almost never use for fear of diminishing their value. So what do I use on a regular basis? A KA-BAR, a Buck, and a Spyderco. All great knives that won't break your budget.
