Ka-bar Bull Dozier

You are the one with the knife, why don't you do a little review and tell the rest of us about it?

Welcome, these forums are a wonderful place for knife lovers of all types.

It hasn't arrived yet. I'm waiting on it... I will do a review when it gets here.

Most of friends tell me I'm a weirdo because I am a knife addict. It's good to find some like minded people!

You are not weird for liking knives

They are weird for NOT liking such obviously good-looking, well-shaped and useful implements.

Ninja, I get the same looks from my friends. For example, I just bought an RTAK-II at a gun show. You should have seen their faces when I pulled it out.

I'm going out this weekend to put it through the paces - I'll let you all know what I think.

Lots of people don't understand the knife thing. The other day i went on deliveries at this ladies house to drop off some furniture and i had to cut the hard plastic tape off the bed. I pulled out my RC3 and cut it and the lady freaked and said "OMG a knife. You get out of my house with that big knife you hear". lol. I laughed and said you should take a look at the ESEE lite machete if you think this is big :D

Well, I'm a newbie here, but I'll give this review business a try.

Description.

The knife is a KA-BAR Bull Dozier. I bought it and its Kydex sheath through Amazon for my wife at a very good price (~$50). We both are members of our County's Search and Rescue team and we backpack from time to time into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, where we are fairly far away from civilization (no cell phone, no VHF radio contact).

The knife has a great heft: it weighs 14 oz and is heavier even than my RAT-7 (13.75 oz). It is made of AUS-8 stainless steel (my RAT-7 is of 1095 high carbon steel). The Bull Dozier has a full tang (it is as wide as the grip), and the handle is very comfortable. (My Ka-Bar 1213 has a stick tang.)

The Bull Dozier has a clip blade, and the clip and 2/3 of the spine have been ground to a false edge. Out of the box, the blade was sharp enough to shave hair from my arm.

The Bull Dozier comes with a Kydex sheath which, when you insert the knife all the way into it, locks the knife securely in it. There is also a web snap-strap to be wrapped around the handle for further security, and a web belt loop. The sheath also has several slots that you can pass, for example, 550 paracord through for whatever reason.

Evaluation.

The knife's grip and heft are awesome, and I really like the blade's large belly, which should be great for chopping.

I hate the sheath, and you will too.

Once the knife is locked into the Kydex, it takes an enormous effort to withdraw it. I kid you not, and I am not alone in my opinion . . .. (I've written to KA-BAR asking them if they sell an alternative sheath, one that doesn't require super-human strength to separate knife from sheath.) My personal opinion is that the strength needed to unsheath this knife makes the process flat-out dangerous.

The spine's long false edge means this knife is suboptimal for "baton wood splitting," though if it's your purpose to fight with it, it's probably okay. (I'm not a knife fighter . . . I rely on something else for personal protection.)

Having said this, the heft and feel of the knife make it great for chopping, adequate for wood splitting and fine for general camp/outdoor use.

Good review.:thumbup::thumbup:

knifeninja, it never ceases to amaze me that people buy a knife, and THEN ask for reviews. Y'all got the cart before the horse.

I continue to worry: as I indicated above, removing my wife's Bull Dozier knife from its sheath is downright dangerous, (others have complained about the same thing).

For those interested, I've received no reply from KA-BAR to the note I sent them. I'll give them another 2 - 3 days before I send a follow-up note.

What about your opinion on value if the sheath issue wasn't a problem. Compared to other folders, do you think you get a fare deal for the money or do you think there are better values to be had?

I ask because I recently bought a Boker Exskellibur 1 for about $64 shipped. I like it fine. The F&F is fine, the blade was mostly centered and the action on that thumb flipper thing is SMOOTH. My complaints are that it chews you right hand up if you happen to carry it in your right hip pocket in the tip down configuration that it came in. That thumb ramp is jimped like a flesh file and it's right where it shouldn't be when reaching into the pocket. To add salt to this, the tiny Phillips screws that attach the clip do not thread into the Ti liners but are very tight. You have to heat them up and use force with a perfect fitting sscrew driver to get them out to move the clip to tip up. It then takes caution to get them into the new position without stripping them. The Ti lockbar is also pretty thin although the fit to the tang and lockup are great. So I say, ok, not too bad for $64ish but then I made a mistake and compared it to a FFG Spyderco Endura for right at the same money give or take a buck and that whole "not bad" notion went right out the door. The Boker has it's place but for a $64 knife (shipped) the FFG Endura kicked the Boker Plus's ass in the first round.

How do you rate the value of this Bull Dozier?

[ . . . snip . . . ]

My wife's Bull Dozier is not a folder.

As for folders, I carry a SOG Flash II and love it. It opens like a dream, is easy to carry, and I have no issues with it.
