Well, I'm a newbie here, but I'll give this review business a try.
Description.
The knife is a KA-BAR Bull Dozier. I bought it and its Kydex sheath through Amazon for my wife at a very good price (~$50). We both are members of our County's Search and Rescue team and we backpack from time to time into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, where we are fairly far away from civilization (no cell phone, no VHF radio contact).
The knife has a great heft: it weighs 14 oz and is heavier even than my RAT-7 (13.75 oz). It is made of AUS-8 stainless steel (my RAT-7 is of 1095 high carbon steel). The Bull Dozier has a full tang (it is as wide as the grip), and the handle is very comfortable. (My
Ka-Bar 1213 has a stick tang.)
The Bull Dozier has a clip blade, and the clip and 2/3 of the spine have been ground to a false edge. Out of the box, the blade was sharp enough to shave hair from my arm.
The Bull Dozier comes with a Kydex sheath which, when you insert the knife all the way into it, locks the knife securely in it. There is also a web snap-strap to be wrapped around the handle for further security, and a web belt loop. The sheath also has several slots that you can pass, for example, 550 paracord through for whatever reason.
Evaluation.
The knife's grip and heft are awesome, and I really like the blade's large belly, which should be great for chopping.
I hate the sheath, and you will too.
Once the knife is locked into the Kydex, it takes an
enormous effort to withdraw it. I kid you not, and
I am not alone in my opinion . . .. (I've written to KA-BAR asking them if they sell an alternative sheath, one that doesn't require super-human strength to separate knife from sheath.) My personal opinion is that the strength needed to unsheath this knife makes the process flat-out dangerous.
The spine's long false edge means this knife is suboptimal for "baton wood splitting," though if it's your purpose to fight with it, it's probably okay. (I'm not a knife fighter . . . I rely on something else for personal protection.)
Having said this, the heft and feel of the knife make it great for chopping, adequate for wood splitting and fine for general camp/outdoor use.
