Ka-Bar D2 Combat Knife?

I've been after a new knife for hunting and general use, but I'm not very knife savy. The only knife companies I knew of before I found this forum: Cold Steel, Colt, and BudK. I know BudK is mostly crap (from experience). Cold Steel's 'Solid Proof' makes me a believer but 'Carbon V' is a mystry to me even being a Metalworker (only a few years). Stainless I know. They neglect to say 440A, or 440C though. Colt is (I've heard) the same as BudK.

Then I found Ka-Bar's D2 Combat Knife. D2 is tough stuff, bettered by hardening and tempering, but how good is Ka-Bar? I found it for $80 new (go me!). $100 is the most I'll spend. I prefer a throwing knife styles better because of the solid one-peice hand and blade (I've had problems with handels coming loose). I tend to jam knives into trees when not in use, while I work outside. I'm trying to break that habit, but no luck yet.

One more question: are Ka-Bar knives shaving sharp out of the box?

Thanx,

Hi there.
I own a D2 extreme.In fact it's my hiking and biking knife.It's a very solid knife.Out of the box it was the sharpest knife I've ever recieved.It's quite big.About 7'' blade with a 5'' handle.If that's too big Ka-bar also makes a shorter one-piece D2 fighter in the Impact D2 fighter.
Of all of the "Ka-bar" makers out there(ka-bar was adopted by soldiers as the general term for any knife of this design no matter who made it) Ka-bar has the best fit and finish. It has also been said that ka-bar is tougher than the others, and will last longer under abuse.
I hope this helps and welcome to bladeforums.

Size isn't a big issue, but the handle style of the Impact D2 fighter looks a little more stylish to me. I'll probably search around a little more, but the Impact is on the top of my list.

Thanx,
