Looking to start a discussion thread on these two knives. I am looking to purchase one of these and curious to read some discussion on which is prefered. I am new here (been reading a lot of threads) and used various folder posts to decide on my EDC/SD folder (decided on a Spydie Millie S30V).

I am mainly curious to hear about these two, but would also welcome opinions on other fixed blades as well. The main need is for camping/survival, but angled toward SD for two and four-legged threats as well, in the "field".

Thanks in advance for input. :)

Kabar is miles ahead of the Gerber here. Blade steel is superior as is design for SD. I've found that some of the features on the Gerber LMFII are good once then you'll never use them again.

The Gerber LMF II is a great knife. The reason I didn't like it was that it was too heavy for me and that was kind of annoying. Plus it was hard to pull out of the sheath. In my opinion the hammer at the butt was useless for me in the woods. I can pound anything into the ground with a nice sized rock. When I lashed it to a spear I found that it was too heavy for spear fishing, but perfect for larger game. It's a hell of a chopper and holds a great edge. Honestly, I can do more with my Recon Tanto. Many people don't use tantos in the woods, but I have never had a problem with it (skinning, fishing, digging, etc.) Also, the LMF II is heavy, yet comfortable to hold. It's weight feels like a baseball bat. This is all from my personal experience with the knife. Every knife is different for every person. Hope you find the one that works for you.

Well I have them both and would hate to have to choose one over the other. Nothing wrong with this Gerber and the Kabar 's are time tested and true. Its a win, win.

The Gerber is full tang, and it's what I would choose. I have the Gerber, but not the Ka-Bar. I love the LMFII, it is one of a few in the rotation when I go camping. It is built like a tank. If you look hard enough, you can find great deals on them too. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for the input so far. I've owned a Ka-Bar in the past and was curious how the LMF compared. Looks like im veering toward the one that hasn't gotten a complaint...so far :)

I have three ka-bars.a d2 spear point,a usmc model.and the shorty.I like all three over any knife that I have personely used by gerber.

Does the Gerber have a full tang?

Not really. The blade tang and the tang of the hammer's butt are seperated so that if you stick it in wires or whatnot you won't get electrocuted. I don't think it's a real detriment or that it'll cause the handle to fall apart if that's why you're asking.

Go with Kabar, you'll be happy you did

kabar d2 no question. Gerber used to make a pretty good knife but i haven't been impressed with them in a long time.
