I posted this on the knives ng and got no response. Can someone please give me a little info on this knife? I trim trees for a utility company, and need a knife for assorted daily duties. Will this knife last me 10 years, or even 20?Will this knife hold a edge for a long time......say cutting rope. How will the blade stand against prying?
How hard is it to sharpen?I see its made of tool steel,Seems to me its hard stuff.last and final question. I found it for 89.95, does anyone want to sell one, or know where i can find one cheaper. Thanks for reading ,and thanks to all that respond.

Funny you ask cause I was looking at one tonight in Smokey Mt cat for $49.95. You might want to check around as far as price goes.

Hmmm.. Strider, where'd you see the price of $42.++? I just browsed through the Smokey Mountain website, and they still list the D2-Extreme folders at $99.99 each...

Their web site listed $99 for the D2, so is it some special in the catalog ?

I must have been asleep at the wheel cause I was talking about the Warthog. For the folders try Patrick at Tripleaught I think he has a spacial on them still going on.

Stihl -- if price is a factor, you can definitely get a knife that can meet the tasks you've noted for much cheaper. I don't know about Ka-bars (didn't even know they were made w/D2 -- very good steel!), so if you're hooked on it, can't help much. But several recent threads have inquired about "beater knives" and "best for under $100," etc., so you might try tracking those down.

Maybe you can say more about the specs you're looking for? Something like a tough 6"-7" blade? Folks have mentioned the Cold Steel SRK, which I've used and like -- good deal for the price. Folks have also spoken highly of the Fallknivens (esp if stain resistance is an important factor) -- the A1 has a blade just over 6" long. Ka-bars w/o D2 can be had for much less, also.

Tool steels in knives made by any reputable company should hold an edge very well. As for difficulty of sharpening: if you keep ceramic rods or some other small pocket-type sharpener on you, you can simply touch-up the edge daily or every so often. Doing so will *greatly* extend the time between sharpenings, and make it easier when you finally need to do so.

I ran into Dick Hillegas of Ka-Bar out at the SOF Convention. He showed me a D2 version of the 7" Next Generation fixed blade. Anyone seen this yet?

A D2 USMC ? Neat, but I'd prefer D2 in a 'Javelina', which would be a Warthog with the hump removed; the 5 inch or so hollow ground blade, nice sized handle and kydex sheath would be great. D2 in a traditional lockblade folder would be great, as would D2 in a large stockman, a trapper, .... :^)
