I've had my eye on the newer Ka-Bar Dog's Head stockman (8313), with Rams Horn scales, for a while and have been hesitant to line up a deal or pull the trigger. No luck finding one locally to handle or inspect for quality so I figured I'd consult the traditional experts here at BF to find what ya'll thought about them.

Any and all pics / comments are greatly welcomed, thanks.

I believe they were made by Canal Street using their stockman frame and 440C steel. The pattern is still in production so if anyone has one they might give you some impressions.

I love it!

Not the greatest pic, sorry, but this is one of my favorite stockman knives. I'm no expert but I believe confucious is right and they are made by Canal Street, at least they look like CSC's stockman pattern and it is 440C. Fit and finish is very good to excellent, as are my other CSC's, with no gaps, good snap and sharp out of the box.

I bought it on impulse and it is one that I'm very glad I did.

Cheers,
Griff

I don't have one marked Ka-Bar but I have one from Canal Street Cutlery. I like the pattern a lot. The blades were very sharp out of the box.

You will not be disappointed and tight, sharp, rams horn, chestnut not bad either hope this helps

KEEP EM SHARP

Well, being honest, was looking for a Dog Head Knife already some time. But I only could find one (!) retailer in Europe who has them. Never mind. What I was asking myself... 440C? As much as the retailer has on his site, it is 420, he said. This makes a difference, imo.

Do you have more information about the used blade steel?

Kind regards
Andi

Hi Andi,

Ka-Bar lists the steel as 440C on their website. I know Canal Street uses 440C as well as 14-4 CrMo.

It's a sweet knife :)

Thank you for the information.

Maybe the retailer just put a wrong information to his site.

Kind regards
Andi

In addition to 14-4CrMo and 440C, Canal Street also makes knives in D2 and 420HC.

If the Dogs Head knife is marked with a model number like Canal Street knives are, you might have another option. The model number of the knife includes the blade alloy. You might ask the retailer to look to see if there is a model number on the knife. If there is, ask him to send you that model number, then go to the Canal Street web site to decipher it.

If there is no model number, I would believe the KaBar web site rather than the dealer. My experience is that dealers make more errors on their web sites than manufacturers do.
