So, as many probably already know, KA-BAR has teamed up with Canal Street to bring back what is apparently an old line of their Dog's Head traditional folders. I for one am really excited about the stockman.

These are to be made from reclaimed chestnut and 440C. I've become a tremendous KA-BAR fan over the last year or so, and I can speak highly to their customer service. By far, they are the best in my book.

Am I right in thinking that this is a revival of an older line of theirs, or am I misinterpreting things? Does anyone own any of the originals? The pics on Tomar's likely do not do the justice, as they rarely do. How do you all feel about this lineup?

The dog's head shield was used on Kabar's old folding hunters and heavy trappers for sure, though I'm not sure what other patterns they used it on. IIRC, the old Kabar used their dog's head shield similarly to the old Remington bullet shields -- pretty much all top of the line knives, usually larger hunter/trapper/sportsman type patterns (the larger Kabar dog's head patterns often had a unique and beautiful style of jigged bone - sometimes called a feather pattern jig).

one antique ka-bar in stag circa 1920 & a 1990 beauty issued by the ka-bars collectors club. very nice knives & the newer one gives up little in quality to the antique.--dennis

That is great news! I just love dog head's and I try to snatch them up when ever I can. I was wondering when KaBar or someone else would rejuvenate that line.
Happy, happy, happy....:D

To have a knife made by Queen...

I need a roadmap for this knife.:D

The one shown in the original post is a CSC pattern AFAIK -- that long bolstered stockman is one of their signature patterns at present (though I suppose they could be contracting it out to Queen). Which also means that it's not a copy of any old KaBar pattern.

Yup, gonna have to get one of the doghead patterns, two of my favorite thing, dogs and knives. That barlow above is awesome!

Yeah, the long bolster is a CSC thing, but the knives are still made by Queen. The spay blade is the biggest giveaway that Queen makes it; nearly every Queen/Queen made stockman I've seen has an identical spay profile. Also, google up a Northwoods 3.5" stockman. All 3 blades are identical to the Kabar/CSC Dog's Head.

I seem to remember that Kabar also has had knives made by Ontario (or maybe it was the other way around), and Ontario is Queen's sister company. Seems like it's all being kept in the family.:)

Which means this Dog's Head should be a very nice knife.

Planterz, Canal Street used Queen parts for roughly the first two years that they were in business, and phased them out pretty quickly once they had their own machinery up and running. They now make all their own parts, right down to the pins, and have for the last three or four years. There's nothing on that stockman, or any of their models that has anything to do with Queen.

Canal Street made several copies of old Kabar knives a couple of years ago for Kabar's anniversary, there was a swing guard pretty much identical to Dennis's above, and a sunfish with worm groove bone copied from and old Union model. They also made two or three fixed blade revivals as well. The models being made now are current stock.

Ah, OK. I stand corrected on that, thanks.

Forgive me for straying off topic, but what's the connection between CSC and Northwoods? Apart from the bolster length, the CSC and Northwoods stockmans appear identical, as well as other models like the muskrats. Did/Does CSC make knives for Northwoods?

Eric, if I understand this right, then CSC has never had Queen assemble knives for them -- they used Queen made parts initially, but still actually fit/assembled/built all the CSC knives themselves?

Yes that's correct, always assembled in Ellenville. Here are a few shots (borrowed) of some of those anniversary knives made by Canal Street as well:

Planterz, as far as I know the Northwoods knives are Queen knives.

From what I have heard that Eric is indeed right about the knives being made by Queen. Northwoods themselves supply the stag.

I was lucky enough to find this Canal St. Ka-bar on closeout. It's a bad picture , the knife and packaging is very nice. It's about the size of a CS Hunter.

That is a nice looking stockman. I think my "want" list just grew.
